Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3481
Original Series, $1 National Bank Note. Toledo, Ohio. . Fr-380. . KL-1086. Charter 809. A pleasing Very Fine note with very bright red seal and serial numbers (many of these Original Series notes have faded with time). Definitely a plus for anyone wishing to acquire a representative of this early design, first introduced with the 1863 National Banking Act. (The municipality of Toledo is located in northwestern Ohio on the western end of Lake Erie and south of the Michigan border. Toledo had once been known as The Auto Parts Capital of the World.).
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

1882, $10 National Bank Note. Wisconsin NB of Milwaukee, WI. . Fr-485. . KL-1191. Second Charter Brown Back, Charter #4817. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 67. An absolutely gorgeous example of a brown back National Bank Note Ten. The centering of both sides is terrific, the original brown overprint is pronounced across the entire front of the note, not just on the seal and serial numbers, and the vivid green back color is the quality of the note when it was printed. Wisconsin Tens are truly scarce in this top grade and this imposing example, with its vivid brown and teal back, is sure to attract considerable bidder attention.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

1882, $20 National Bank Note. National Security Bank of Philadelphia, PA. . Fr-498. . KL-1263. RCGS graded Extremely Fine 40. Charter #1743. Desirable (yet affordable) brown back design for the Type buyer, this from one of Philadelphia's more established banks. The large E on the face of the note denotes the Eastern region of the country. National Banks, being a precursor to the Federal Reserve System of 50 years later, had regional code letters on the face of the earliest issues as an aid to sorting and redistribution to the issuing banks.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

1882, $20 National Bank Note. Columbia NB of Pittsburgh, PA. . Fr-550. . KL-1273. Second Charter Dated Back, Charter #3910. PCGS graded Gem New 65 PPQ. Fresh appearance graces the crisp white surfaces. Deeply saturated blue embossing on the seal and numbers mingles nicely with rich embellishment of the design on the front, while the back has its own wonders to reveal. An attractive gem that wears its high quality proudly. At the left, the Battle of Lexington, April 1-9, 1775. At the right, Columbia leading procession. This large Pittsburgh issuer, established in 1893, was closed March 5, 1927 when only $98,200 in large size notes was left outstanding. Well worth your consideration.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

1902, $5 National Bank Note. Douglass NB of Chicago, Illinois. . Fr-608. . KL-1165. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65, Exceptional Paper Quality, Signatures Type: Stamped Elliott/White A lovely note on this scarcer Chicago bank. At the time the bank shuttered its doors during the Chicago Bank Panic of 1932 (the actual close date was May 21, 1932), this establishment had a mere $9,930 in large size notes outstanding. Few are as fresh and bright as this handsome specimen, with its clear stamped signatures and excellent centering. The 1863 National Banking system was the precursor to the more formal Federal Reserve banking system introduced in 1913. The two systems overlapped until 1935, when the National banks (those that hadn't gone bankrupt) were folded into the Federal Reserve system.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,250.
