Lot 3479
1890, $5 Coin Note. . Fr-361. . KL-255. PCGS graded Gem New 65. A fabulous example of "the Rock of Chicamauga" with the earliest style reverse, a popular Type due to its ornamental engine-turned design and colorful aspects. These notes were in circulation for a short while. The government discovered they were part of a speculator's arbitrage scheme to drain the U.S. Treasury of its dwindling gold reserve. Within a few years, Congress acted by abolishing the Act that had authorized Treasury or Coin Notes. Very few Gems survive of the 1890 series.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 3480
1891, $20 Coin Note. . Fr-375. . KL-596. Choice to Gem Uncirculated. Low serial number B23. A fabulous note that is sure to stir considerable interest among type collectors. The collector gets a four-bases grand slam, with the high denomination, the extremely low serial number, the extremely high quality, and the overall historic significance of this rarity. The paper is fresh and glowing white. It profides a sturdy foundation for the embossing in sharp black with red seal and serial numbers on the front side of the note, with the traditional rich green shade found on most issues of 19th and early 20th century large size backs. Once sold, this note may go into a collection for years, perhaps decades!

This special series of Legal Tender currency was from the Act of July 11, 1890. Notes were redeemable "IN COIN" meaning that the holder could request either gold or silver coin on demand. The notes were made only for a short few years before the issuance was discontinued.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 27,000.
