Lot 3402
1862, $1 United States Note. . Fr-17a. . KL-2. CGA graded Choice Uncirculated 64. All early U.S. Notes are in strong demand from paper money buyers. This handsome note has nice green overprint and a red seal with red serial numbers. The corners aren't quite sharply pointed, but the margins are complete and there is a nice absence of the usual counting smudge at upper right. The portrait is that of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Lot 3403
1875, $1 United States Note. . Fr-26. . KL-13. PMG graded Gem Uncirculated 65, Exceptional Paper Quality. A fancy ornamental frame at right around ONE DOLLAR is the most notable difference of the 1875 Series of Legal Tender ones from those that follow (1880 and 1917 series). Like many of the other notes in this fine consignment, the paper is fresh and white, crispness complete. The colors are vivid red against the black and white front, with deep rich saturated green for the reverse. The photographs captures this nicely, but first-hand viewing still is best!
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

Lot 3405
1880, $1 United States Note. Serial Number ZI plate position A. . Fr-28. . KL-15. PMG graded Choice Fine 15. This is the very first note of the design! The numbering system started with the letter Z and this was the top positioned note. It is estimated that fewer than one hundred #1 Type Notes are in existence today with many more #1 Nationals known. The reason being that the #1 Nationals were saved by proud bankers but the poor government officials saved very few. A unique find!

The 1880 Aces with the large brown seal have always been a sought-after Type. This particular note, with its superior colors and unique status should likely prove to be a major hit with bidders.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.

Lot 3414
1862, $2 United States Note. . Fr-41. . KL-100. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 67. This 1862 Hamilton Deuce has exceptional color, we are almost tempted to say "perfect color", which is true of both the paper and the inks. The centering is better than average for the issue on both sides, including complete margins, and the note has few peers in terms of visual impact. A specimen of currency that has earned its CGA Superb Gem quality grade.

Alexander Hamilton's visage appears on numerous American bank notes since he was first honored by a spot on the $5 federal Demand Notes of 1861. In the instance of this $2 we are presented with one of the profile portraits of the first Secretary of the Treasury. Unlike many of his other appearances, this appears to be a youthful rendition.

Something else perhaps worth mentioning concerns the circular 1-2-3 device to the right of his bust. The 2 has been highlighted. The same highlighting can be seen on the 1 of the $1 note of this series. Why, then, the 3? Was the Treasury anticipating a $3 bill. And if so, why did nothing ever come of it? This is one of those tantalizing mysteries for which an explanation may never be forthcoming.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

1862, $2 United States Note. . Fr-41. . KL-100. RCGS graded Gem Crisp Uncirculated 65 PQ. This historic 1862 Hamilton Deuce has perfect color of both the paper and inks. The centering is top-notch for the issue on both sides, as well, a great benefit to the collector, while the note exceeds most others of its grade class in terms of eye appeal. A special note that leads us to agree 100% as to its lofty grade.

1880, $20 United States Note. . Fr-136. . KL-535. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65, Exceptional Paper Quality. A gorgeous specimen featuring large red spiked shield and blue serial numbers. Rosecrans and Hyatt signatures. Fresh white paper gives a lift for the brilliant colors on both sides, with gem-level indicators everyplace one cares to examine it. The Legal Tender (or U.S. Note) type harkens back to the 1862-63 Civil War era as the first "greenbacks." Following restoration of gold money in circulation in 1879, the government passed a law to limit the amount of Legal Tender notes in circulation to a set amount. This amount is still the law today, more than 120 years later (although you will rarely if ever see any of the modern Red Seal Legal Tender notes in circulation, most are held by the Federal Reserve system). An historic offering of this popular Type.

1862, $100 United States Note FACE PROOF and BACK PROOF. . Fr-165. . KL-784. A Specimen Pair! Described and graded by PMG as follows: Fr. 165 Chittenden/Spinner $100.00 1862 Legal Tender Face Proof, Choice Uncirculated 63, Punch Cancelled. Together with: Hessler 1121 India Paper on Card $100.00 1862 Legal Tender Back Design Proof, Choice Uncirculated Exceptional Paper Quality. Extremely Rare and the first of such we can remember handling.

The $100 denomination of this series has a large American eagle as its front motif. This was the first note to feature the American eagle. The back uses the Second Obligation wording. Legal Tender notes, or as they are equally described, United States Notes, were spun out of the monetary crisis that developed at the start of the War of the Rebellion. (According to the Dept. of War, the official records refer to the American Civil War as "The War of the Rebellion".) This specimen has punch cancels through the two printed signatures of Chittenden and Spinner, as mentioned, and is on fresh India paper card stock. Lot of 2 notes.

A major type note and always in great demand, for obvious reasons, early collectors concentrated on smaller denomination large size bills. Only a handful of hundreds of this issue of 1880 avoided redemption and destruction. A handsome example.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 20,000.
A comparable Very Fine specimen at Lyn Knight's Nov. 9, 2007 sale realized $25,300.
