Lot 2538
1852-O $20 Liberty. EF-45. Some minor hairlines but all in all a fit representative from the New Orleans Mint. New Orleans was and still is a major port serving the South and the interior of the continent via the Mississippi river and a myriad other famous-name waterways in the upper Midwest (PCGS # 8907) .
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,400.

1855 $20 Liberty. AU-55. Light grease streaks on both sides. This is a lustrous example without too many bagmarks. The design features are all sharply impressed by the dies, including full radials in the stars. It is thought that the slanting 5s in the date in 1855 were a special favorite of the mint engraver's James Barton Longacre. Slanting 5s are found on most denominations this year, and on some 1856 issues as well (PCGS # 8914) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

1855-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-60. A hint of natural light golden toning. A satiny specimen with solid credentials for the MS60 grade: ample remaining cartwheel luster enhances the rich shades that grace the surfaces of this attractive early S-mint double eagle coin. Production started out strong in the early years at the San Francisco mint as pent-up demand and a flow of bullion and private-issue gold coins supplied the resources for these magnificent double eagles. Pop 16; 72 finer. (PCGS # 8916) .

1858-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Light golden toning on both sides. Smooth matte gold finish with a blushes of reddish gold luster around devices. An unsung early S-mint date, especially when found in choice AU58 condition. Some lightness of strike which is found on occasion on these is nowhere indicated; the fact is, this coin is well above average in its strike, originality, and attractive condition. 1861-S $20 Liberty. Pacquet reverse. PCGS graded AU-53 CAC Verified. PCGS certification #12243417. A very scarce date. Mostly untoned with luster a-plenty around the stars and legends and clearly evident within the devices. Identifiable by a small mark on the neck and another between the lowest curl and the 61 in the date. Rims are outstanding.

The Paquet reverse was not generally recognized as a variety until the 1930s. A number of pieces were located in Europe some two decades years later, and while these have increased the population of Paquet $20 gold modestly, but the Type still remains the scarcest S-mint double eagle. The reduced protective rim on the reverse was the primary reason for the cancellation of Anthony Paquet's modifications. This led to undue wear on the coins, which is one reason so few high grade examples are available. This particular specimen shows a number of small abrasions

Anthony C. Paquet, assistant engraver to Longacre, modified the reverse design, supposedly as an improvement. Lettering is in a taller and narrower font, which proved unacceptable after a few were struck in Philadelphia. Today, just three of these survive. In San Francisco, 19,250 examples were minted before orders were received to discontinue use of the reverse die. Thus, a highly collectible rarity was created. The example shown here is among the finest AU survivors from the San Francisco coinage. Pop 9; 7 finer; 5 in 55; 2 in 58. (PCGS # 8936) .

1873-S $20 Liberty. Closed 3. NGC graded MS-62. Nice golden toning on bothsides. A scarce coin this nice. A carefully preserved gold-surfaced beauty whose high-end depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh glossy mint bloom. Where an ineffectual imprint is often left after the rebound of the dies that struck San Francisco's coinage in 1873, the opposite is in fact the case here: devices show unusual clarity and strong definition at the centers, on the stars, and elsewhere. Bidders be forewarned, you may face stiff competition. Pop 11; None finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8969) .

Double Eagles of 1873 were made with Closed 3 in the date and Open 3 in the date. A quick glance at the 1873-S Closed 3 date, made early in the year, resembled "1878," as the knobs on the 3 nearly touch. The Open 3 was created by filing away most of the bottom knob on the 3 of the date logotype and trimming the knob to a smaller size; dies punched with this modified date logotype are called Open 3.

An pleasingly lustrous specimen, no doubt about it: The obverse explodes with bright rose-gold radiance while the reverse is a similar rich amalgam of gold and reddish shades. Far be it for us to threaten our customers, but unless one is an astigmatic in both eyes, then a large majority can see plainly that this coin is among the few such specimens of its kind. Roused by such knowledge, bidders may well assign it a top-market price when the auctioneer's voice shouts the final bid. Pop 263; 29 finer; 28 in 64; 1 in 65. (PCGS # 9005) .

1887 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 61 Cameo. PCGS certification #12243414. Lovely rich golden toning. Very important date. Only 121 Proofs struck of this Proof-only year. The Proof-only 1887 is one among several great rarities in the Liberty double eagle series. The original production of so few Proofs cements its place in the register of rare dates. To which we add, its low ratio of surviving specimens points to either great attrition or insufficient sales at the time of issue (often, any overage is melted). Having that in mind, the mirror field of this Proof 61 specimen has the requisite "orange-peel" undulation of a Proof $20 from this decade. It does display a fair number of small abrasions on the central devices and in the fields but these are within the parameters of the assigned grade. Anyone attempting to complete a date set of double eagle, or the even more demanding complete date and mintmark set, finds that the 1887 is one of the main challenges to completing such a set. Pop 1; None finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 89103) .
