1851-D $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Untoned. This is among the more affordable Dahlonega Mint gold dollars. This date has long been regarded as one to acquire since examples tend to be better struck than other issues. The strike is extremely sharp, with full radials noted on the stars. The hair has fully defined curls except over the ear where some strands are fused, while the wreath is bold. There is a prominent die crack on the reverse and both sides show die clash marks. The surfaces are very brilliant for the grade. Only 9,882 minted. Pop 24; 11 finer, 5 in 63, 5 in 64, 1in 65 (PCGS # 7515) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Lot 2277
1851-O $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. Wonderful shades of natural golden toning, peachy orange as it accents the free-flowing mint bloom. A beautiful "O" mint $1 Gold Coin bidders should not overlook. Pop 34; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7516) .

Though a gold coin of the denomination of one dollar had been an integral part of Alexander Hamilton's original scheme for America's national coinage (1791), no design for an actual coin of this kind was prepared for circulation until 1849. At the time, four mints were issuing one-dollar pieces: Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans ("O"), Charlotte, North Carolina ("C"), and Dahlonega, Georgia ("D"). The branch mints in particular are rare to extremely rare in Gem MS65 condition.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1853 $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. A beautiful looking coin. This satiny golden dollar dances with strong luster. Nicely struck, too, indeed fully so, the stars, hair curls and beads along the rim of the coronet all stand-outs. Turning to the reverse, there are almost no abrasions found on this side either. Definitely special mention is merited. A must for any Gold Type Set buyer (PCGS # 7521) .
Estimated Value $1,350 - 1,400.

1853-O $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly untoned. Vibrant strong luster flow is noted. A choice New Orleans Mint Type I gold dollar, sharply struck in the main with satin surfaces that blossom with luster. This is one of those instances where "common date" status rapidly yields to scarcity at the Choice Mint State 64 level. As it is, the present beauty is accurately certified by NGC. Careful examination under low magnification reveals a couple of tiny blemishes, but putting these aside, the present coin easily warrants the assigned grade. Pop 38; 12 finer, 10 in 65, 1 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 7524) .

1855 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61. A nice untoned coin. Both sides put on view the distinctive "look" for this P-mint Indian gold dollar delivery: smoothly frosted surfaces, some cartwheel effects, and average-struck devices. There is nothing hesitant about this one when it comes to uncleaned originality. Devices are dull in the usual areas, as struck, such as the hair below LIBERTY and the central part of the reverse, which the grading service has taken into consideration in assigning the grade (PCGS # 7532) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

1855-C $1 Gold Indian. NCS graded Details of EF-40. Reverse damage. Some light clash marks as made. A notoriously poor strike. This example has a nice clear date and mint mark. Best of all, it is one of a scant 9,803 pieces made at the Charlotte Mint that year, the only time Charlotte struck gold dollars featuring the Type 2 small Indian Princess head (1854-56) (PCGS # 7533) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,750.

1858 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo CAC Verified. Encased in PCGS holder 13909342. A wonderful Gem Proof. This coin was in a first generation holder and graded Proof 64. Sent back to PCGS for regrade and now is tied for the finest deep cameo graded at PCGS. Mintage unknown. Approximately 25 Proofs struck. Never fearing contradiction, we can state without hesitancy that every Proof gold dollar struck prior to 1860 is great rarity. The 1858 is legendary, one of the most difficult dates to acquire since so few are ever offered. This specimen has none of the usual lint marks or planchet flakes associated with early Proof gold coins. In fact, the surfaces are of a deeply mirrored nature with simply beautiful warm yellow-golden color. As often happens, the reflective background frames the contrasting devices whose frosted surface serves to create a well-known cameo manifestation. Clearly, this is a coin for the specialist! Pop 2; None finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 97608) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

1874 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-64. Lightly golden toning. Complete LIBERTY on headband. 1882 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo CAC Verified. Old holder. Well struck and choice for the grade. The presently offered specimen graded Proof 65 Cameo, and, considering just its numerical grade it is among the finest graded examples of the '82 Gold Dollar in Proof. As such it stands as a coin of that a collector can use as a standard-bearer for other Proof gold coins, a great find for the dedicated numismatist. Along with the impressive grade, it has much to offer where aesthetic qualities are concerned. The surfaces reflect deeply the orange gold surface with sharply contrasting satiny and lustrous devices. Some faint stippled effect is seen in the fields, sometimes called "orange peel" effect and typical among Proof gold dollars of the 1880s. A truly sterling example in every respect. Only 125 proofs struck. Pop 7; 4 in 66 CAM; 1 in 67 CAM. (PCGS # 87632) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.
