1854 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Fully white coin. Desirable two-year Type. A very choice example of this date, the fields being satiny and lustrous, the designs better than average detailed. Lot 2076
1881 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-67 Prooflike. A well struck glittering white gem. Rare low mintage date. There was increasing coinage of silver in the mid-1870s. Then, toward the latter part of 1877, vast numbers of previously exported "old tenor" silver coins dating from pre-1873 began returning to the United States from abroad, principally from Central America and Canada. Tens of millions of coins (worth perhaps as much as $30 million in the estimate of Robert W. Julian) returned like a whirlwind from the past. This vast "inpouring" continued well into 1880, much to the amazement of observers.

According to Julian, silver miners and their political partners were not only amazed by the unexpected inflow, but were enraged, because the mints were no longer buying silver for minor coinage. There was no demand for such coinage and the channels of trade were clogged with it. Yet there was no inflation in prices paid for goods and services at this time.

In response to this inpouring, the Treasury ordered the suspension of minor silver coinage in early 1878 and did not resume it for some years because of the accumulation in the Treasury. It is Julian's contention that contrary to popular belief, the coinage of Morgan dollars had nothing to do with the interdiction of subsidiary silver mintage in the years 1879-90.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

The silvery luster on both sides of this handsome Barber quarter resonates with watery reflection. Lot 2096
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-66 Full Head. Popular key dae. Well struck with a hint of light reverse toning. A one-in-a-thousand example of this popular first-year issue, with explosive yet satiny luster that gleams over pristine surfaces. There are no spots. There is a full display of natural silvery sheen in the underlying patina. Having covered the mint bloom, we take stock of the coin's detail. Clockwork precision seen in the head and drapery folds of Liberty, as well as in the complete rivets visible on the shield. The low-flying eagle (which would be more centrally located in the Type 2 pieces) displays razor-sharp plumage on its body and wings. Put a glass to this coin anywhere and the viewer will come away breathless from its beauty. There is no escape for the bidder; forget about posting a flabby bid; anyone who does should forget about winning it. This coin will definitely go up to a strong price in today's marketplace for strictly graded, high-end rarities! Pop 17; 3 finer in 67. (PCGS # 5704) .

Hermon (with an 'O') MacNeil made the designs for a quarter dollar which was "intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection." Liberty is shown "stepping forward to the gateway of the country." The shield is raised "in the attitude of protection." "The right hand bears the olive branch of peace."

1917 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Moon-glow bright silver-white cartwheel luster radiates on both sides of this gleaming white example. United States silver coins struck in 1916 and early 1917 enjoy a "textured" luster, almost velvety, unlike anything before or since. The velvety nature is most notable on high quality Mint State specimens of the new designs: Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The closest we can come in comparison is on the very rare Matte Proofs and Satin Finish Proofs also struck in the teens. The present Standing Liberty Type 1 Quarter shows this textured luster to its fullest (and, we might add, quite alluring) effect. We encourage all collectors to examine such coins for their beauty and artistry, since this was American coin art at its zenith (PCGS # 5707) .

1917-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. Type 1. NGC graded MS-67 Full Head. A superb gem glistening with luster and delicately toned. The surfaces possess a vibrancy in tune with its high standing on the grading scale, with rippling velvety texture rather than bright luster frost that is seen on the later dates in the Standing Liberty quarter series. On the heels of such active luster, we are pleased to present a coin faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies. The design is exceptionally strong. There are no photographs nowadays. Only "camera portraits" and "lens impressions." The allegorical features that you see in the pictures of this handsome quarter dollar are therefore more of an artist's impression of strong patriotic themes elicited by the major societal blow of World War I.
