Draped Bust Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1984
1796 Draped Bust Dime. NCS graded Details of VF-20. Tooled. A popular first year issue. Light toning here and there (PCGS # 4461) .

Historic note: Although the dime is an essential part of America's decimal coinage system, it was one of the last coins issued by the United States Mint when operations first began. By the time it made its debut in 1796, as thedraped bust, small eagle dime, the Mint had already been making copper cents and half cents for three years; silver dollars, half dollars and half dimes for two years; and even two gold coins -- the eagle and half eagle -- for a year. The only other coins delayed, like the dime, until 1796, were the quarter dollar and quarter eagle.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

Lot 1986
1805 Draped Bust Dime. 4 berries. NGC graded MS-67. Star. Housed in NGC holder 1972936-001. Wonderful blue toning on both sides. Fully struck and one of the finest known for this date. Similar in overall quality to the all-brilliant MS67 in the ANR June 2004 sale, but an even more spectacular Gem because of its color. To say that this 1805 dime stands tall and peacock-lovely by virtue of its fabulous deep radiant blue toning is only a start, and despite aesthetic appearances, it is only part of the story. A key feature, but not the only major aspect. The most beautiful quality is that this specimen is far above average in strike, dancing with shimmering mint luster (Elvis Presley shaking his hips could not keep up with its vibrating cartwheel glow). And finally, the coin is remarkable for the 1798-1807 years with draped bust obverse and heraldic eagle reverse, which usually are poorly struck. The present coin is as close to razor-sharp in its details as any serious buyer could want. Most features are strongly defined, and we can say without indecision or faltering that not one in twenty 1805 dimes of this type, regardless of condition, regardless of provenance, can match it in this honor. There are no heavy clash marks present, which is unusual. A remarkable specimen, therefore, tied with one other for finest certified by NGC. A coin that combines high grade, remarkable color, aesthetic appeal without peer, and rarity. Watch this one top the charts! (NGC serial #1972936-001.)

The Draped Bust obverse is by Robert Scot. Reverse with Heraldic Eagle motif. The denomination is not stated on this coin, nor does it appear until the 1809 capped bust series replaces this heraldic eagle Type.

Comments: Dimes of this design circulated heavily in the eastern states during the Jeffersonian period, with the consequence that most seen in the market today are worn. The few Mint State coins, if of decent quality, can be called scarce. (Interestingly, a few reverse dies used to coin dimes of this type were also used to make gold quarter eagles due to their similar diameter, a sense of the frugality we see time and again at the fledgling U.S. Mint.) Pop 2: None finer at NGC. (PCGS # 4477) .
Estimated Value $80,000 - 90,000.

1880 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and mostly white. Only 36,000 minted for circulation. The meager mintage can be partly explained on the glut of Morgan dollars that the Philadelphia Mint was forced to produce by the dictates of the Sherman Act of 1878; also, at this time, vast numbers of pre-1873 silver coinage came flooding into the country where they had been in hiding during the Greenback era of 1862-72. This specimen is boldly made and of impeccable quality, with silver-brightness that gives both sides a pleasing quality; the luster emits a full frosty sheen. Pop 26; 27 finer; 15 in 66; 12 in 67. 1916-D Mercury Dime. NGC graded MS-65 Full Bands. Well struck and a nice untoned coin. The powerfully struck, lustrous surfaces are readily appreciable at all angles on this key date '16-D Mercury dime. This is an important issue among collectors of Gem quality date and mint mark issues. No one can honestly deny the vibrancy of the surfaces, that is a given. The near-superb quality, too, shows in the fully struck devices exhibiting fine detail to all the high points of the hair and wing, fasces, diagonals, and cross bands. Only 264,000 were minted. Pop 23; 7 finer; 5 in 66; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 4907) .

Historic note: A. A. Weinman designed a dime in which the obverse was a winged head of Liberty derived from the denarii of Ancient Rome. The designer explained that "the wings crowning her cap of Liberty are intended to symbolize liberty of thought." He selected "the fasces and olive branch to symbolize the strength which lies in unity, while the battle-ax stands for preparedness to defend the union. The branch of olive is symbolical of our love of peace."

1916-D Mercury Dime. MS-60 Plus. Full Bands. Light hairlines. Propably cleaned years ago but this has very little influence over the coin's attractive appearance. Since our observation is that this date is rarely fully struck, then this sharp coin has every suggestion of precision manufacture as seen in hair at the brow, the wing on the cap, and the fasces with its strong bands, but the cross bands and those that are on the diagonal. Only 264,000 1916-D Dimes were released; nearly the entire mintage found its way into circulation, which accounts for the rarity in Mint condition. (Modern hoarding techniques have changed all that.) 1916-D Mercury Dime. Unc. Details. Improperly cleaned. Lightly toned. Key date and well worth our estimate.

According to numismatic historian Keith Scott, "The design of the Mercury dime is that of a 'Winged Liberty' and is based on a bust that Weinman did in 1913 of Elsie Kachel Stevens, wife of well-known poet Wallace Stevens, who happened to be tenants of a New York City apartment building owned by Weinman. The winged cap was to symbolize freedom of thought. The reverse of the coin depicts the fasces, an ancient symbol of authority, with a battle-ax at the top to represent preparedness and an olive branch beside it to signify love and peace and authority.

"Production and release of the new dimes was delayed until later in the year of 1916 as the dies were not quite ready. The Philadelphia and San Francisco mint produced Barber dimes much of 1916 to meet demand while Denver ceased producing Barber dimes in 1914. Once the dies were complete, production began with both Philadelphia and San Francisco cranking out millions of dimes. Denver though produced a mere 264,000 making the 1916-D an instant rarity. Shortly after the dime began circulating, many people began calling it a "Mercury dime" due to the wings on the cap. Mercury is the Roman god of trade, property and wealth as well as messenger to the other gods. The hat, called a Petasus, is similar to that worn my messengers during the time when Mercury was worshipped. Mercury gained his speed from his wings. Although not the original and intended name for the new time, the term Mercury stuck and that is what it is known as today."
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
