Lot 4551
Ben-Gurion, David (1886-1973) Autograph letter signed in Hebrew to "Gruenbaum" (Yitzchak) updating him concerning the gravity of the political situation in London. In Hebrew, green ink on paper. Two pages. Taped repair to lower margin. 8" x 6½", London, September 20, 1945. Ben Gurion makes three points:
1) President Truman's recommendation to Prime Minister Attlee that 100,000 certificates for immigration to Palestine be made available immediately, has been rejected.
2) The British Government has decided to continue the policy of the White Paper with the adjustment that just 1500 Jews per month be allowed entry to Palestine (this decision will be formally announced at the meeting of Parliament on October 9th, 1945).
3) Friends inside the Government have opined that this decision is not final. In light of the situation, Ben-Gurion advised that all talks with the British Government be suspended; that Ch(aim) W(eizmann) tender his resignation in symbolic protest; and that the Government handle Aliyah itself. Finally, Ben-Gurion summons the Zionists of England to a special meeting, to be held Monday next (Chol ha-Mo'ed Sukoth).
Ben-Gurion was Chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive, and Greenbaum was a member of the Jewish Agency Executive; he later became Israel's first Minister of the Interior.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Lot 4552
Ben-Gurion, David. Typed letter signed in Hebrew "D. Ben-Gurion," as Minister of Defense, one page, 7 7/8" x 6", May 14, 1955, on State of Israel letterhead. A letter to an Arab discussing the impending war with Egypt. Addressed "Dear Friend." He writes: "I have received your letter, and your loyalty is very precious to me. Following the coup d'état which was carried out by the present heads of Egypt, the Government which I headed welcomed the rebels against King Farouq, and I expressed my hope that the revolution would bring blessings to the Egyptian people, the Egyptian peasants, the Egyptian laborers, and would pave a new road of peace for itself. It is regrettable that the heads of Egypt have disappointed our hope, and the hope of the Egyptian people, as the heads of Egypt have repudiated their people and cast it down, and they are now seeking to embroil it in a war with Israel. I am certain and convinced that the Egyptian tyrant will pay a heavy price for his aggression." Fine.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

A letter to Abba Eban, the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, regarding Israel's need for nuclear weapons and American acceptance of this policy.

Ben-Gurion writes: "I must note that I am rather pleased with your communiqués concerning the awakening of American public figures to our demands for defensive weapons, and with the waves of public sympathy and sup[port, which encompass broad and important circles in the United States, for the fulfillment of our just demands and for enabling the provision of defense guarantees to the State of Israel. Our demands for weapons are becoming more urgent from day to day, and I hope common sense and logic will prevail in the American administration ." Very Fine.

King George VI, Palestine Mandate Broadside (1895-1952) Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George was born into one of the world's most prominent families; he was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria. In the mid 1930s he was troubled by his older brother's affair with a married American divorcee named Wallis Warfield Simpson. He felt woefully unprepared to reign, but after his brother abdicated in December 1936, he summoned his remarkable courage and will power, and took over as king. He was crowned King George VI in May 1937 at a time when European dictators were beginning to rattle their swords. This 28" x 20" broadside announces the new king to the citizens of the Palestine Mandate on May 12, 1937. Very Good, with 2 major folds and one minor one; a minor tear at the top of vertical fold and small hole at center horizontal fold.
