Maria had a complicated and convoluted path to the Portuguese crown. Pedro was the logical choice to become king, but he abdicated to rule Brazil and had seven year old Maria proclaimed queen with her uncle, Miguel, as regent and husband to be of Maria. The kindly uncle arrived, deposed Maria, and had himself proclaimed king. Pedro forced him to abdicate in 1834 and the marriage was annulled with Maria being placed on the throne.
