The quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala. It is a strikingly attractive bird,and greatly revered by the Mayan culture. One legend states that the quetzal used to sing beautifully before the Spanish conquest, but has been silent ever since. It will sing again when Guatemala is truly free.

Reza Shah was an extremely intelligent and ambitious man who accomlished much, alienated many, and ultimately caused his own undoing. His basic foreign policy was to play off the Russians and the British against each other. Both countries disliked the monarch, but played the game to attempt to gain favor with the geographically important Iran. This policy worked until Britain and Russia united in 1941 to combat Nazi Germany, and to depose the Shah.

This privately minted 'retro' pattern is one of a series of 12 and was inspired by the work of the numismatist W J Taylor who in the mid 1800s produced a series of coins using Kuchler's spectacular portrait of King George III, and Reginald Huth who produced several gold and silver Victorian Irish patterns. Choice Brilliant Proof.

Only two specimens have been struck in gold with the reverse upright.

Struck by INA Limited England in 2007, made of 22 carat gold. Will be listed in the next edition of Colin Bruce, Unusual World Coins, published by Krause. The dies are still in existence and will be made for silver and base metal coins only, then the dies will be canceled.
