The face on this series of notes features a representation of "History instructing Youth," with the Constitution at right. In the background is a view of Washington D.C., including the Capitol and Washington Monument. The back features portraits of George and Martha Washington and was designed by Thomas F. Morris.

CGA graded Choice Uncirculated 64 The portrait on this briefly issued design is William Windom, one of President Cleveland's staunch hard-money supporters who, ironically, was honored after his death by placement on a "soft money" silver certificate. At the time, the 1890s, there was a great debate in the public forum about which form of money was best for honesty and future prosperity. Silver certificates (backed by silver dollars) had been first introduced by the U.S. government in 1878.

1896, $5 Silver Certificate. . Fr-269. . KL-239. PMG graded Choice About Unc 58. Scarce popular Eductional $5. Looks like a strictly Choice Crisp Unc to this cataloger! The design for the Series of 1896 $5 Educational note is by Walter Shirlaw, a muralist who was commissioned to design the five and ten dollar notes for this series. The central vignette is entitled "Electricity Presenting Light to the World." The central figure, representing Electricity, holds a light bulb, presumably of the incandescent type perfected by Thomas A. Edison just a few years earlier. Other figures represent Force, to the left, Fame, with the trumpet, and Peace, seen here with a dove.

1899, $5 Silver Certificate. . Fr-276. . KL-246. PCGS graded Choice About New 55. A rarely offered Friedberg number in such high grade, the Napier-Thompson signatures were used for a few months only. Still crisp paper with excellent color. (Carmi A. Thompson, one-time Treasurer of the U.S. (1912-13) later went on to preside over Fidelity Investment Association as president of one of the largest U.S. "thrift plans" in the 1920s that sold over $600 million worth of contract certificates.).

While not a rare Type per say, the Indian Chief $5 is still difficult to find with this combination of fine attributes.
