Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3601
1922 $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. Light golden toning. Easily the most visually arresting feature of this coin is its soft, frosted golden mint luster. Full swirling luster on both sides, in fact. A gem! Pop 985; 7 finer in 66 (PCGS # 9173) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.

Lot 3605
1922-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Beautiful golden luster. Always frosty for the issue, as seen here, the bright-gold color is nearly gem level with few bagmarks, none of which affect Liberty's graceful figure. Deficiency isn't in the cards, either, when it comes to this coin's detail, in fact, outstanding is the word to describe the striking detail on the main devices, with only a few shallow feathers on the eagle's breast and upper leg. In modern times many 1922-S double eagles have appeared on the auction scene, in contrast to the rarity of the variety in early times. Most are in Mint State 60 to 63 and baggy, however, and anything finer like this splendid MS64 remains a rarity. While somewhat over 1,000 examples are estimated to exist, the marketable supply is always limited, considering the increasing demand for Saint-Gaudens double eagles. It seems likely that most of the 1922-S coins were retained in the United States and melted in 1937. Thousands were exported. This was an ideal situation for the numismatists, as foreign banks held in reserve many coins that would have been destroyed had they remained in America. Pop 266; 12 finer, 10 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 9174) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1922-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice golden toning with some pinkish rose accents in the fields, a very becoming mix of colors. The 1922-S is also slightly better when sharply made like this. Coinage of double eagles varied all over the map in the early 1920s. In 1920, there were none struck at Denver. In 1921, only Philadelphia struck this denomination. In 1922, none again at Denver. In 1923, none in San Francisco. Only in 1924-27, did all three mints resume full production (PCGS # 9174) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

1928 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-67. A lovely example with rich golden toning. Nice satin like surfaces. A boldly original gold-surfaced coin whose high-end beauty complements the equally fresh mint bloom and superlative surfaces. Fortunately for the strike, it, like the luster, is outstanding. A well-struck example with good details. There are no bothersome abrasions or points of wear. A tiny mark on Liberty's calf identifies this particular specimen from the few others in MS67 that have been certified at NGC. Pop 57; 3 finer in 67 star (PCGS # 9189) .
