1909-O $5 Indian. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned. Scarce date. Much original luster present and largely "old gold" in color with warm golden accents on both sides. Examine it once. Examine it a second time. What you will find is delightful, nearly fully struck devices, with just the faintest touch of weakness at the lowest point of the headdress feathers; the all-important mintmark being bold and clear. 1909-O has the lowest mintage in the series: 34,200 pieces struck. Pop 296. (PCGS # 8515) .

With the Indian $5, unlike his predecessors, designer Bela Pratt chose to honor a real American Indian for a change, not some made-up Liberty wearing an incongruous Indian headdress. And because of this, his design helped to propel American coin design into the World Class league.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

1909-O $5 Indian. Sharpness of AU-58. Boldly struck with a nice sharp "O" mint mark. Cleaned long ago, probably just wiped with a jeweler's cloth as was common in the 60's and 70's. Has an excellent "look" and will fit nicely into a Lucite plastic board. Key date and always in demand.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

1911 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck, the coin sparkles with frosty mint luster. A Premium Quality example that could finally end up in a MS-65 holder. Pop 325; 46 finer (PCGS # 8520) .

Due to the unusual design on these (and the Indian half eagle), the top surface acts as the rim on other coins, and is there to protect the recessed relief designs. All too often, even Mint State coins, when jostled around in mint bags during bank-to-bank transfers, the coins would have their delicate surface frost rubbed off. Only a small population of fresh, frosty coins like the this 1911 quarter eagle are around to supply the needs of collectors.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

1911-D $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-61. Lightly toned on both sides with a lovely reddish gold glow. 1911-D is one of only 3 dates in the Indian $5 set which has mintage below one hundred thousand. In fact, well below that figure, at 72,500 pieces (the others being 1908-S and 1909-O). Always a challenge to find in Mint condition. This one is especially well struck. It has a firm, bold mintmark.Pop 59; 56 finer. (PCGS # 8521) .

1911-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely sunset golden toning. The satin-like luster is almost unimpaired by abrasions of any size. Devices were struck with the primary energy required to impart most of the design to the outer areas as well as enough vigor by the dies to impart clear-cut centers. Only a few feather ends show any softening. 1911-S, like others from this branch mint, is scarce in Mint State condition. Specialists as well as agitated amateur collectors in the series will be bidding, so award it a strong mid-four figure bid. Pop 100; 26 finer; 18 in 64; 7 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 8522) .

1913-S $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-62. Mostly untoned. Scarce date. This is one of a select group of anomalous branch-mint dates in the series where mintage is relatively high but Mint States are virtually unavailable. The surfaces are bright from the lovely mint frost that swirls around both sides. Struck with preciseness only now and then found, the mintmark shows typical soft detail (PCGS # 8526) .

1914 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Old green holder. Light gold toning. A vibrant coin soaking up mint glow on gold surfaces with nothing to censor it from its Choice grade. 1914 is the year Henry Ford, of the Ford motor car company, shocked his competitors by lifting the daily wage rate for an assemblyline worker to $5 per day from $4 (and unheard-of amount). Bear in mind, too, there were no state or federal income taxes to pay for the average worker back then. Imagine, too, getting one of these 1914 half eagles in your pay envelope back then! 1916-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely rich golden toning. The satin-like gleam of golden-colored originality is safe and sound from most abrasions of measurable size. Furthermore, the devices are sharp in all areas, as struck, as most wanted by collectors, which the grading service has weighed in assigning the grade, as also preferred by collectors. Pop 160; 83 finer; 72 in 64; 8 in 65; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 8532) .

1929 $5 Indian. MS-63. Very rare and popular key date. Mostly untoned. We feel especially privileged to have to fortune to offer not one, but two, rare 1929 half eagles in this auction. This is a brilliant gold specimen, a piece that can undoubtedly hold its own in terms of aesthetic appeal from the assigned grade. It has lovely brilliant surfaces overall with just the slightest field contacts on either side. The bright, glowing surfaces are free from copper spots, and there is there is every indication that the dies gave it a proper hard blow, imparting all of the design features. Well struck pieces are a must for the rarities buyer (except for the types of coins that tend to come weak in the first place). A wonderful opportunity for the half eagle collector (PCGS # 8533) .
Estimated Value $21,000 - 22,000.

Lot 3351
1929 $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-62. Popular key date. Lightly toned. Always in demand. Frosty with mint luster. During 1929, the Philadelphia Mint produced quarter eagles, half eagles, and double eagles, but no eagles. And since coinage requirements could be met by the home mint at Philadelphia, the branch mints were left out of the picture on the subject of gold coins, none were struck at Denver or San Francisco this year. The quarter eagle of 1929 is an easily acquired issue with general affordability. On the other hand, the half eagles and double eagles are both rare and hard to pin down. For collectors of Indian half eagles, examples in MS62 are offered from time to time, but finer Gem quality pieces cost nearly a king's ransom.

This final year of issue example would make a fine acquisition for this popular series, and a very rare find indeed. Most were gathered up and melted during the gold seizure of 1933. Later (1937) the seized coins were melted and formed into bars. Precious few 1929 half eagles survive, let alone in such Choice condition. The present coin shows strong luster and excellent surfaces required for the NGC grade. Pop 43. (PCGS # 8533) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000.
