1874 $3 Gold. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly untoned and a nice strike. Clean as a whistle for this mid-level grade, as one would look forward to from the grading service's opinion; however, what really makes this break free from others is its unique dancing cartwheel luster that rolls around each side. The luster on $3 gold pieces has an undulating effect to it, possibly the result of the narrow wide planchets used to differentiate them from the $2.50 denominations. Pop 75; 13 finer, 11 in 65, 1 in 65 star, and 1 in 66 (PCGS # 7998) .

1884 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely golden colors on both sides. Housed in an old green holder. A nice cameo look. Only 106 Proofs struck. Any advanced numismatist would give the world to own such a splendid Gem Proof $3 that clearly has naturally toned, undipped surfaces stretching from the center outwards. Appealing light apricot-orange color flows throughout the fields and converges on the portrait, where the warmest saturation occurs. The coin glows. It really does. The fields reflect the high grade in more ways than we could express in a short description like this. The obverse, as seen from the photographs, is the lesser toned of the two sides, and displays nice reflective qualities. Having that in mind, although it isn't stated on the holder, Liberty's portrait has a touch of frost, giving the coin the two-tone look beloved by generations of collectors. The more fully developed reverse toning has the same glow, with similar warm saturation and beauty as the obverse. Since only 106 Proofs were struck (and a fair percentage of this issue reached circulation during the troublesome 1930s decade), Proofs of the caliber found here are precious reminders of an earlier, bygone era in American numismatics. A rarity not to be overlooked!

Identification can be deduced by a small toned oval a millimeter or two below Liberty's bust, and also cognizance should be made of the (early) PCGS serial #04592497. Pop 9; 1 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 8048) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

1884 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo. A wonderful example. Mostly untoned with a hint of gold color. The golden glow on both sides is full with a somewhat satin texture to the devices which qualifies it for "deep cameo" status. Extremely beautiful! This is a decidedly well-struck Proof with all of the finest details clear, unlike some other, carelessly made specimens. It has no bothersome copper spots or other impairment, either, which increases its prestige, nor did the dies leave behind a less than rigid impression of softness in the centers. The centers are fully defined. The sleuth-hound collector will be drawn to it at once for these reasons! Only 106 Proofs struck. Pop 1; 4 finer; 1 in 65; 1 in 66; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 98048) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

1886 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-55. Lovely golden toning with reflective fields. Only 1,000 minted for circulation, this is among the scarcer dates in the 1880s and a "find" for the collector because it is so choice, so attractive. Pop 30; 78 finer. (PCGS # 8008) .

1888 $3 Gold. Proof 63. Nice golden surfaces. Some reason PCGS claims coin has altered surfaces. A beautiful coin of which only 291 were issued. The 1888 Proof $3 had the largest mintage in the series, although no precise count of survivors is available. The present specimen is a glowing example, sleek golden in color, boldly made, and in fact, one of the frostier cameo pieces in this regard. Both obverse and reverse have surfaces with the "orange peel" ripple to the mirrors. There is some graininess or "aura" seen to the sides of the Liberty, this being normal for the Proofs (and found on other dates of the 1880s as well). Such a choice coin will be a great addition to either a specialized $3 gold piece collection or a U.S. gold Type Set.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

1889 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 63. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides. Only 129 proofs struck. A glittering golden $3 Proof of impressive quality and oceans of eye appeal. With so few Proof strikes of the date produced, it stands to reason these are in high regard. Proofs back then were routinely acquired by speculators (as well as a small group of wealthy collectors), yet nearly all acquired extensive hairlines in after years. In fact, a dramatic indication of the present day elusive quality of this piece in choice Proof can be found in the relatively low census figure: Pop 13; 47 finer (PCGS # 8053) .

Known as the $3 Indian Princess issue, these lovely coins combine a unique design with exceptional scarcity and heightened collector demand. As most have low mintage, they offer superb value to gold investors. The $3 denomination was minted from 1854 to 1889. Its supposed reason for existence was to allow the public to buy 3-cent postage stamps in packets of 100 (which, of course, only a few people did). The obverse design features the profile of Liberty as a stylized Indian princess crowned with a tiara of feathers, containing the inscription LIBERTY on the headband. The reverse depicts a wreath by the mint engraver James Longacre comprising American agricultural crops of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.
