Lot 3155
1849-D $1 Gold Liberty. Sharpness of AU-55. Possible light reverse marks. This is the first year of issue for the Gold Dollar, following discovery of gold in California. At the same time as the Mint decided to strike a dollar denomination in gold, it also began preparation for a $20 gold piece that would come out the next year. Scarce Dahlonega Mint issue. Only 21,588 minted.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

1851-D $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. A full deep impression was left by the dies, all topped off by glittering untoned luster. We note some clashing of dies consistant with a well struck coin. An interesting die crack is noted on the reverse from the left rim through the date. Only 9882 were minted. Pop 24; 5 in 63, 5 in 64, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 7515) .

Lot 3161
1854-D $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Only 2,935 struck. Light golden toning. Light even reddish golden toning. For those who want the briefest account, the low mintage makes this date famous. This beautiful rarity sums up nicely the experience of the gold consignment of which it is a part. The coin exhibits toned satin luster on a well presented and attractive planchet with only a trace of wear on the high points of Liberty's hair. It is the kind of coin that collectors expect to find in the grade. Elusive as a date, elusive in no uncertain terms. Even more is this true in high grades. Next, the strike. The strike is crisp in many areas, so-so in others. Some lack of detail may be noted at the central hair on Liberty, just below the word LIBERTY (but not on the stars). When describing the reverse, we see the usual disparity on the denticles as well as marginal weakness on the lower left side of the wreath. Some bidders might edge away from bidding when presented with an 1854-D gold dollar. After all, this is one of the rarest D-mint dates in the series struck at all the historic Dahlonega branch mint. Only the P-mint 1854 is at all common. However, as the population figure suggests, the coin is rather rare and deserves twice the honor because it is so fresh and lustrous looking. Pop 34; 29 finer at NGC (PCGS # 7526) .

Lot 3162
1854 Type 2. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Well struck with a nice full date. The surfaces scream with luster, the obverse a mixture of light gold and pale olive colors while the reverse is a golden-orange. This Premium Quality beauty should stir considerable bidder interest. A very important Type.

On this Type 2, the wreath of corn, cotton, maple, and tobacco that Longacre would in due course immortalize on the Flying Eagle cent also made the move from the three dollar gold piece to this gold dollar. Once the Treasury Department agreed to the new design, coinage began on August 19, 1854 (PCGS # 7531) .

There is a shallow area in the planchet below RIC on the obverse, and a few small marks consistent with coins of this period and grade range. The Type 2 Indian heads include several common issues (1854, 1855), a couple of dandy rarities (1855-D, 1856-D), and this mid-range scarce 1856-S, as the only S-mint in the short 1854-56 run of dates and mints that comprise the small Indian head style. 1876 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-60. Light golden toning with reflective surfaces. Lustrous. A not quite bold impression was left by the striking of the (possibly worn) dies that made this 1876 gold dollar. The surface, however, is almost choice by comparison with others in the MS60 grade. The new owner will feel more at ease knowing just how scarce this is in Mint condition: only 3,200 made. Pop 4; 97 finer. (PCGS # 7577) .

1878 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant Gem Proof. Only 20 Proofs struck. Very rare. Almost exactly equal to another lovely Proof 65 that was offered in our sale in February this year, and a sparkling specimen whose fluid gold color shoots out streaks of radiance from the mirror surface. Since our observation is that this date is always fully struck in Proof (the few offerings we can trace going back 40 years), then this sharp coin has every suggestion of precision manufacture as seen in all devices. In fact, struck with mathematical precision by the dies. While the much-touted 1875 Proofs have similar mintage, this 1878 rarity often gets overlooked, which it shouldn't. Prospective bidders, as they wend their way through the offerings in this sale in silent admiration during lot viewing, will perk up when they see this lovely specimen. To us, every Proof gold coin of this quality deserves a full market bid. The coin has clearly been preserved with care and admiration by its former owners. Pop 1; none finer. (PCGS # 87628) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

1879 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. A flashy glittering Proof with splendid contrast. Only 30 Proofs minted for this low mintage date. As we said, this is a beauty, with nice snappy gold color on undisturbed surfaces free of discoloration. Where an ineffectual imprint is often left by the rebound of the dies that struck this Type's business strike coinage, the opposite is in fact the case here: devices show crystal clarity and abnormal detail in the centers, all thanks to the Proof dies and the Mint striking the coins twice by the dies. Bidders be warned, you may face stiff competition. Pop 1; 2 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 66 Star (PCGS # 7629) .

1881 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 63 Deep Cameo PQ. Nice golden toning on both sides. Orange to tawny-gold in color with a bold strike, the surfaces reveal a few scattered faint hairlines. That being the case, this date is also difficult to find fully struck. The present Proof retains needle-sharp detail to the main devices from a strictly above-average strike. Only 87 Proofs struck. Pop 1; 10 finer; 5 in 64; 1 in 65; 4 in 66. (PCGS # 97631) .

It was only in 1882-89 that mintage increased markedly over what it had been before in this series of Proofs. It appears there was a short-lived speculative boom that also affected the production levels in the $2.50 and $3 gold issues to a slightly lesser extent before numbers dropped off again.

1886 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo PQ. Mostly untoned and well struck. A rare choice quality coin for the date, this example is composed of almost enthralling golden color whose reflective surface is untoned, with sharp detail throughout. In light of that, we can also say this piece is nicely struck with extremely full devices on both sides. There is some minor uneveness on the hair behind the ear as regularly seen on the few Proofs of this year that make their way onto the market. A very handsome offering. There is the usual crisp purity of style in James Longacre's design that attracts collectors to the Indian gold dollar series. Only 1,016 proofs struck. Pop 1; 7 finer; 4 in 65; 3 in 66. 1888 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 64. Nice even golden toning. Only 1,079 Proofs struck. This is a blemish-free case in point of the Proof 1888 issue in this grade: sleek deep yellow to orange gold in color, with mint sparkle that grabs hold for the full effect of the careful preservation since it was made. Needless, too, to remind bidders is the fact that the coin shows outstanding detail and a clear, even strike. Identifiable by a single tiny toned spot on the obverse at the E of STATES, and a similar area of toning on the reverse along the edge at 2:00. From the collector's point of view, a Proof Gold Dollar like this constitutes the biggest thing in life, a marvel in miniature of Mint workmanship, and a fact that hasn't changed in more than a century and a half of active numismatic collecting in this country!
