Trade Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2922
1874-CC Trade Dollar. NGC graded MS-62. Lovely frosty surfaces which are lightly toned. An attractively lustrous CC-mint example with residual cartwheels beneath the satin luster. Turning next to a key area in the grading scheme, especially for the elusive Carson Mint dates, this is a nicely struck example exhibiting fine detail to all the high points: Liberty's dress, the stars, the other obverse ornamentation, and on the reverse, almost 100% detail on the eagle (only the edge of one wing shows any rounding, and it is minor). Most of the toning occurs on the reverse. All of the luster is fresh, original, and as we said, very attractive (PCGS # 7035) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.

Lot 2924
1875 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo. A gem white coin. Very rare. Completely untoned with spectacular mint brilliance over pulsating crystal clear fields. The offsetting devices show snow white surfaces and are of the "ultra" quality that collectors find attractive. No more than the luster comes a desirable strike. This piece is struck with scientific exactness throughout the stars and main devices. Needle-sharp from the specially prepared Proof dies. A dramatic Proof trade dollar, to say the least. Imagine this jewel as it sits gleaming in your coin tray! Only 700 Proofs struck. Tied for finest Ultra Cameo. Pop 3; None finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7055) .

1875-CC Trade Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned, with semi-prooflike fields supporting the more frost-laden devices of Liberty and the eagle. Popularity increases when a Trade dollar in this condition also carries the historic "CC" mintmark above the denomination (PCGS # 7038) .

Lot 2927
1876 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 64. Lovely rose color toning with electric blue iridescense at the borders. A total 1150 Proofs were coined. A thrilling example of this always-popular Trade dollar Type. This exceptional coin is beautifully toned and very nicely struck. A hint of weakness that is sometimes seen on the later Proofs (1879-83) is missing on this sharply struck Centennial Year 1876 specimen, with the key central areas razor-sharp from the dies. Pop 45; 20 finer (PCGS # 7056) .

1876-S Trade Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely rainbow toning that centers around sunset-glow golden radiance at the periphery. A showy mint-fresh example, as crisp and gloss-laden as anyone could ask for in the MS64 grade. A rounded impression is the sometimes noted for Trade dollars imprinted by the stamp of the dies that struck this date; we are happy to see that the present example is a grand exception to that rule in being very sharp throughout, including centers. Pop 86; 5 finer, 4 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 7043) .

Lot 2930
1880 Trade Dollar. Brilliant Proof 60 Plus. Lovely dappled blue and sunset golden toning that could be suspect as to its originality, but is, onetheless, a very pleasing example of this Proof-only year with a mintage of 1,987. The strike as keen as a razor on all stars as well as the bale of hay, the sheaf of wheat, and all of the eagle's feathers. One of the more attractive and intricate coin designs to come out of the 19th century.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62 Prooflike. A nice white coin with prooflike surfaces. Not a gem but this one goes a long way with what it has got, from the highly concentrated prooflike luster that is deep and mirror-like, to the continuous eye appeal of the white-frosted Liberty head and eagle. Don't mind the few light contact marks on the profile and eagle, either, since these are typically seen for this grade, and everything has been taken into consideration by the grading service when arriving at the grade. A popular "CC" mint dollar (PCGS # 7087) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. . VAM-3, CAPPED CC. NGC graded Top 100 MS-61. Frosty and untoned. Normal light surface abrasions from coin contact within the bank bag. After a good start in 1878, the Carson City Mint seems to have slacked off in 1879, whereas the other branch mints continued to strike large numbers of silver dollars. 1879-CC is among the scarcest dates in all grades from this storied Western mint (PCGS # 7086) .
Estimated Value $2,300 - 2,400.
