Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2737
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-61. O-101. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides. Among the finest known. A great coin. PCGS # 07998124. A highly desirable specimen of America's first half dollar issue, which is only stating the obvious, since this is indeed one of the very finest known of the variety or, for that matter, the date. Lovely dove-gray antique silver surfaces yield effortlessly to subtle olive accents over the generous cartwheel luster. The eye appeal is magnificent, "boasting an incredibly original appearance" as the 2004 Stack's catalogue put it. The strike is outstanding on both sides, a chief consideration for this often haphazardly hand-struck issue. A coin with exemplary detail that is seen in Liberty's hair, the eagle's head and wings, and the peripheries. "Some natural adjustment marks are seen on the obverse," explains the ANR cataloger of this coin in 2006, "but only under scrutiny, as the force of the strike mostly obliterated them; the diagonal vestiges are most notable in the high point of Liberty's hair at precise central obverse, with lesser lines seen on the cheek and in the field in front of Liberty's chin. A few shorter adjustment marks are seen outside the stars on the right side of the obverse. A thin curved scratch runs from in front of Liberty's nose to inside star 13, some minor scattered contact points, nothing serious. The overall quality is impressive, and the aesthetic appeal is grand. Some people refer to a specimen like this as "wholesome," though we prefer the rare-book term 'unsophisticated,' used to describe a book that has never been rebound, fixed, or otherwise tampered with."

A rarity in all grades, Mint State 1794 half dollars are a special. They are a highly desirable breed. A handful of top grade pieces exist from this Overton-101 die pair, including the lovely Eliasberg coin, the high-grade Reed Hawn-Queller specimen, the Jimmy Hayes coin that last sold in 1985, and the magnificent F.C.C. Boyd-Noblet coin (PCGS MS-63) that was sold in 1999 for $288,500. "With only these few to satisfy all the connoisseurs of this popular denomination," says the ANR sales piece, "the opportunity to purchase one is not to be taken lightly. Many great collections of half dollars have contained only circulated specimens of this date; even Pryor had only a VF from this die marriage. Ownership of any 1794 half dollar is a point of pride, but successfully purchasing a specimen like this could really define a world-class cabinet of the denomination." Pop 1; 1 in 64 (PCGS # 6051) .
Estimated Value $350,000 - 375,000.

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. O-130. R5. The only variety with berries arranged 7-10.Very well struck on a very decent planchet. Full sharp hair waves really opens your eyes with its detail! The definitive AU58 Flowing Hair half dollar. We do note a light mint made adjustment mark (die line?) that bisects Liberty's head. Plenty of mint luster is still present and all is overlaid with a uniform light slate gray tone. This exceedingly attractive specimen is from obverse die 18 in which star 1 pierces the open curl well through the lower part. Also, the point of the last star is centered in the opening between two star points and close to it. On the reverse, the berries are 7 left, 10 right (and the only 1795 reverse with this division). A fine die crack runs through S OF AMER and round defect dots are in STATES OF AMERICA. O and C are recut (PCGS # 6052) .

Several slightly differing head- and eagle-device punches were used during the year, the final ones attributed to John Smith Gardner, briefly Assistant Engraver: the famous and rare Small Heads. Half dollar coinage was interrupted to allow personnel to devote time to making silver dollars and gold coins, on orders of the new Mint Director, Henry William DeSaussure.

The varieties in this series (without or with die blunders) are nearly as individualized and distinctive as their cherished counterparts in the cents, and have come into their own with the latest release (fourth edition) of the Donald L. Parsley United States Early Half Dollar Die Varieties book.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 23,000.

1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. PCGS graded Proof 60. PCGS #04499896. A popular coin. Lightly toned on both sides. Old green holder. A bold quality specimen seemingly better than its modest Proof 60 grade, and of one of the more historic U.S. coins in terms of the Mint's first production using steam operated coining presses. Reflective fields on both obverse and reverse are finely overlaid with toning and there are no marks. The devices are lightly frosted on both sides to give a noticeable contrast. Razor-sharp: each device stands out squarely and forcefully on this rare Proof, a coin intended to symbolize the highest coining art of the time. Just the centers of the last two stars a tiny bit flat but still showing full radial definition elsewhere.

This is Gobrecht's handiwork, the engraver who took over the task of producing Mint dies after his superior, William Kneass, the chief engraver at the Philadelphia Mint suffered a stroke in 1835. Perhaps 10 to 15 examples were struck as Proofs, while a few other strikes show prooflike tendencies but their weak character gives them away as business strikes. A Proof of this era is something out of the ordinary, one to celebrate as a special occasion. Those who are fortunate to be able to examine this coin with a magnifying glass, close up, first-hand, will quickly appreciate its beauty. Pop 1; 10 finer, 1 in 62, 4 in 63, 5 in 64 (PCGS # 6223) .

1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. VF-35. Lightly toned and cleaned. A rare and long unappreciated low mintage date as a mere 1200 were minted. According to Donald Taxay's lengthy discussion of the introduction of coins struck on the Mint's new steam equipment, "In November 1836, the Mint began to issue new half dollars from dies designed by Gobrecht. The Liberty head was finely drawn and very beautiful. However, no change was made in the heraldic eagle despite the omission of the motto [E PLURIBUS UNUM]." Mint director Patterson, in referring to this new half dollar in a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Woodbury, said, "The milling [i.e., reeding] as well as the striking, has been done by the new machinery, and the steam-power; and the saving of labor, and the acceleration of our work, will be very great. Heretofore we have used two screw presses for coining half dollars, --one of them only occasionally. The smaller of these presses required three men to work it, the larger four. The steam press, with a single hand to feed the planchets, will do more work than these two presses with seven hands." Mass coinage production had finally come to the Philadelphia Mint.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck and mostly untoned. The silvery luster on both sides twirls with a somewhat satin texture and is almost iridescent in its sheen. That covers the luster. It appears to us that all minute detail is fully evident on this bold 1837 Reeded Edge piece, including the stars and especially noticeable on the razor-sharp eagle feathers and shield. A winning combination. Pop 80; 47 finer. (PCGS # 6176) .

During autumn 1836, Christian Gobrecht (appointed Second Engraver in 1835 when Kneass had his eventually fatal stroke) completed working dies for half dollars of a new design intended for steam coinage at the new weight standard established by Congress. These reeded edge half dollars of the new issue were the first to be made for circulation on the Mint's new steam press. Steam coinage had been a goal of Mint Directors ever since 1797, when Matthew Boulton originally demonstrated its value by coining over 34 million pennies for the government of George III of Great Britain, more nearly identical (and more difficult to counterfeit) than any similar quantity of coins had ever been.

Lot 2783
1870 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Lovely rainbow toning with semi reflective fields. Well detailed for this more difficult P-mint issue, an elusive year in Gem Mint State quality, with sharp details that add considerably to the colorful appeal its toning. If, having examined dozens of "near" Gems, you've gotten a thoroughly jaundiced view of the availability of high quality Seated Half Dollars, then this 1870 should bring you around to a differing opinion. It is a genuine pleasure to behold! Should be viewed. Pop 3; 1 finer in 67. (PCGS # 6327) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,000.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely blue and lilac toning. Pop 13; 2 finer; 1 in 66; 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6429) .
