Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2676
1897 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo. A fully white superb Gem Proof. Occasionally, we come across an extra special Proof of this Type. Barber's formal portrait of Liberty is heavily frosted, so much so that the grading service reserves the term "Ultra Cameo" for coins like these. Liberty's profile is extraordinary. As is the reverse eagle, and a bright sheen of rich silvery freshness graces the devices and fields on both sides. The mirrors are deep and reflective, almost impossible to comprehend to anyone never having seen a coin in this condition. With extraordinary cameo contrast being the result, the mint outdid itself when striking this coin. Until an absolutely perfect example of the date gets offered, pay attention and look lively when bidding commences! Only 731 proofs struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 68. (PCGS # 5683) .

Lot 2692
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-63 Full Head. Intensely lustrous, unusual for this date, with lovely delicate light golden highlights. Important first year and the key date to the series. A very respectable Choice example of the quality one likes to see for this actively collected Type 1 rarity. As with other 1916 quarters in Mint condition, sleek velvety luster blends naturally with the toning highlights on the satin surfaces. Oddly enough, 1916 is a distinct variety, for when the mint switched to coining 1917-dated pieces, it introduced a noticeably modified master hub. Collectors, however, acquire the 1916 not for this reason but for its fame, rarity and low mintage (52,000 pieces). We expect bidders to react by placing numerous, rising bids. Pop 31; 105 finer. (PCGS # 5704) .

Lot 2693
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. A brilliant and totally white example. Always in demand. The key date to the series. One would be hard pressed to locate a more attractive 1916 standing Liberty quarter at the MS61 level, even if one were to search a dozen major coin shows back to back. The satin frosted, ice white surfaces seem like a blizzard come alive. There are some minor surface imperfections as might be expected, but nothing that disturbs. Moreover, the rims are very choice. Even the finest, most delicate detail is found on this attractive coin struck with uncommon exactness for a 1916; were it only possibly for all the design to be as sharp as the lettering and outer areas on all such pieces, but that isn't standard for this date.

1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. AU-50. A lock-solid frosty AU50 with strong primary luster within and around the devices that spreads out nicely into the field on both sides; and naturally toned on both sides at the rim, possibly from years in an old Wayte Raymond-style coin album. More than adequately struck for the 1916 issue as well, perhaps not 100% so, since this issue rarely is due to the "soft" detail imparted to the coining die by the working hub, but certainly a coin that gets the nod where fullness of design is concerned. Some minor hairlines are noted.

1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded AU-55. A well struck example with the overdate quite distinct. Some luster remains. A very desirable untoned example of this key-date rarity. In describing it in greater detail, we see there is baking bright luster extending well across the satiny surfaces on this high end About Uncirculated example. A touch of weakness may be noted at Liberty's head of course (full heads are elusive), but clearly the dies were spaced just close enough to impart strong metal flow in the main obverse and reverse devices. After-striking features include a short mark on Liberty's thigh and two or three little ticks on the edge of the eagle's wing -- nothing special or out of the ordinary. Bidders will want to focus on the attractive color and silvery luster of this rare overdate. Pop 18; 75 finer (PCGS # 5726) .

1927-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. NGC #1805761-001. A creamy color gem glittering with intense mint luster. The 1927-S in spectacular MS67 condition is far rarer as such than any other standing Liberty quarter, except for the 1918-S overdate. And it must always be remembered that this issue is not found with the same depth of strike over Liberty's ear, as say, a 1927 Philadelphia Mint. There is always just a slight bit of softness in that area, even on the strongest 1927-S quarters.

With only 396,000 pieces produced, the 1927-S is the principal rarity among regular issue standing Liberty quarters. It is even rarer than the 1916, though almost eight times as many coins were struck as the 1916; the 1916 was saved in substantial numbers as a "first year" design. Apparently very few noticed the low mintage for the 1927-S at the time, causing Mint State quarters in 1927 from the San Francisco mint to be rare today.

A superb coin in all regards, this lovely brilliant example is tied with just four others for finest certified by NGC. More than adequately struck with shimmering white surfaces and field perfection that most can only dream about. Both obverse and reverse have vibrant underlying luster. Although this piece is not certified as Full Head, it is nevertheless noteworthy. What earthly reason could you have for not placing a bid? Pop 4; none finer (PCGS # 5764) .
Estimated Value $24,000 - 26,000.

1927-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A popular key date. The head is 3/4 full. Lightly toned on both sides. A sharply struck Gem that has radiant luster originality from top to bottom. Struck with systematic exactness throughout, and unusual for the rare 1927-S, there is no need to focus on the central part of the devices where a somewhat flattened impression is often left by the dies. This coin is decidedly bold in the centers. Only the head on Liberty lacks complete relief, along with a couple of the rivets on the shield she supports on her shoulder. Mintage for this elusive issue: 396,000 pieces (most of which circulated). We have known the 1927-S quarters long enough to realize that bidders will have a tough time acquiring this MS65 at anything less than a strong market bid! Pop 42; 28 in 66,4 in 67 (PCGS # 5764) .
