Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2626
1796 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Lovely blue toning on both sides. Semi reflective surfaces. Well struck. Browning-2. R3. The "High 6" variety of the issue, one of just two known die pairings for this low mintage single year type. This is the more plentiful variety of 1796 by a small margin. Early state: The obverse of this example is perfect, with no die cracks through LIBERTY. (On the rare late-state examples, several heavy die cracks are seen through ERTY and star 9.) A gorgeous toned example whose gleaming field sports original color on both sides. The color tends towards iridescence in several areas. Best of all, this is a very pleasing example of the date, not fully struck on the eagle's head or upper right leaves in the wreath, but with more than sufficient detail to put it well ahead of the pack in terms of overall excellence (PCGS # 5310) .

The design of the 1796 Draped Bust, Small Eagle quarter dollar had its genesis in the almost universal disdain for the previous Flowing Hair coin designs on the silver denominations, designs that were widely criticized. To avoid further public embarrassment, Mint Director Henry DeSaussure engaged renowned portraitist Gilbert Stuart, who supposedly used as his model the prominent Philadelphia socialite Mrs. William Bingham (nee Ann Willing). The likeness of the buxom Mrs. Bingham was first applied to the Draped Bust dollar issued late in 1795, followed by this quarter dollar, the dime and half dime, as well as the half dollar in 1796.

The obverse portrait is encircled by 15 stars, with the inscription LIBERTY above the head and the date below. The reverse depicts a small eagle on cushion-like clouds, within a wreath of olive and palm branches. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the wreath. The quarters of 1796 lack a denomination.

Only 6,146 of the new quarters were struck in 1796. There are just two varieties known, one with a low 6 in the date and the other with a high 6, the Low 6 variety being the scarcer of the two. Collectors generally want only one coin for a type set, and herein lies the enduring popularity of the 1796 quarter. While it is not a rare coin for the era per se, anyone who attempts to complete a Type Set of United States coins must have a 1796 quarter, as this design was made in only this one year.
Estimated Value $70,000 - 75,000.

1818/5 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. B-1. Attraactive medium gold and natural blue toning on both sides. A satiny well-toned Mint State with resilient underlying luster that merges nicely into the "antique" colors. From center to periphery, the coin is generally well struck with just a hint of weakness at the overlap of the left edge of the shield with the eagle's wing. Stars are all sharp. Ten die varieties this year from a mintage of 361,174; the 1818/5 overdate is the most impressive of these. Pop 3; 32 finer (PCGS # 5323) .

1820 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. Large 0. . B-1. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Great colors, blue gold and lilac. Although uniformly frosted under the toning, the fields are slightly brighter in the centers than the peripheries on both sides. Lovely iridescence is noted throughout, with the overall appearance suggestive of a higher grade. Bold strike throughout. Consider this a premium level coin that is sure to please just about any collector.

A total 127,444 large size quarter dollars dated 1820 were minted from a combination of three obverse and four reverse dies to produce five varieties. Three of the four reverse dies were used in later years. Browning-1 is currently believed to be Rarity-3. It is distinguished by its large 8 and 0 in date; also, the U in UNITED is relatively close to the wingtip. Very similar to Browning-2, however the location of the second T in STATES relative to the I in PLURIBUS confirms the variety. Pop 1; None finer. (PCGS # 5329) .

On the 1825/3 B-2 overdate, the eighth star is low on the cap, a low final star and the high denomination identify the die pairing. The underdigit 3 is clear on this example. Star 8 is well behind the peak of Liberty's cap, and on the reverse the denomination 25 C. is high and away from the rim.

1834 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. B-4. R1. Old holder. A vibrant coin. Well struck with lovely blue and golden toning. This is indeed a lovely, healthy-glowing Gem, whose obverse and reverse being essentially identical in their characteristics and color, beam with frosty, heavenly Gem-quality luster. Precision strike on every device. A marvel of coin preservation, in other words, and diametrically opposed to the lesser "also-rans" parading around in this numerical condition. The Department of Angelic Relations will look kindly on a very substantial bid. Pop 8; 5 finer; 4 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5353) .

Die characteristics: The 4 in the date is recut, and close examination reveals a network of slender die cracks about the reverse periphery. From the obverse of 1834 B-3, 4, and 5, combined with a reverse die unique to this variety.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

1837 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Browning-1, R4. Nice original toning on both sides. Excellent strike. On this piece the diagnostic die crack through D STATE on the reverse is quite pronounced, and if the crack above D connected with the rim it would be a retained cud. The obverse shows another lengthy die break in the lower region affecting star 1, the end of the bust, and continuing on back across star 13 to the rim. A lovely coin overall, the satin-like surfaces have golden brown peripheries that deepen around the denticles to crimson-purple in a few places, with an occasional dab of blue intermingled. Sharply struck throughout, there are no objectionable abrasions on either side of this lustrous small sized Capped Bust quarter (PCGS # 5356) .

Six die varieties are known for the quarter dollar coinage dated 1837, from three obverse and four reverse dies. The quarter dollar mintage for the year was reported as 252,400 coins.

1873 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. NGC graded Proof 66. Gorgeous royal blue and vivid violet colors on both sides, dazzling, iridescent. A wonderful opportunity for the date or Type collector looking for a stunning gem example of the popular "with arrows" type. Only 600 Proofs struck. In 1873, the year in which this scarce Proof seated Liberty quarter was struck, Congress sat down in a long session and hammered out a new coinage bill. Shortly after the bill was passed, silver miners discovered they had been given short shrift. They nicknamed it the Crime of 1873. What Congress had done, among other things, was to rationalize America's coinage system; gone was the two-cent piece, the three-cent silver, the regular issue silver dollar; added was a new trade dollar for use in the Orient. This piece is therefore a wonderful legacy of those times, and an important one, for that matter, because it is so scarce.

As in the case of the 1853-5 "With Arrows" silver coins, arrows were added to the obverses of the coins to facilitate the sorting of the old weight coins (those struck prior to the above-mentioned April 1873 Mint Act) from the new weight coins. This was mostly a matter of expedience at the Mint and Treasury. Pop 11; 4 finer, 3 in 67, 1 in 68 (PCGS # 5574) .
