Lot 2576
1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-63. JR-6. This is the so-called hyphenated date variety because of the die break through the date. Well struck and very attractively toned with alternating shades of reddish-gold and grayish-blue. The obverse exhibits a very interesting bisecting die crack from star one thru the date up into the bust and out at star eight. Popular first year of issue and always in great demand. Pop 18; 33 finer with 18 in 64, 7 in 65, 7 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 4461) .

1796 Draped Bust Dime. Sharpness of EF-45. JR-2. Cleaned, resulting in mildly rough surface. A nice looking type coin all the same, and the first year of issue. Draped bust (also known as "Fillet Head") bust dimes were minted with a small eagle reverse in 1796 and 1797 only, a two-year Type.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

1797 Draped Bust Dime. 13 stars. . JR-2. NGC graded AU-55. JR-1. Nicely toned on both sides. Carefully preserved by its former owners, the choice surfaces display natural "old silver" patina with a bit of iridescence. The overall appearance greatly bolstered by this coin's acknowledged rarity in all grades. It comes down to this: Valentine-1 is the rarest of four varieties for the year, and it is the only die variety of the design type with 13 stars on the obverse. Both sides have a few shallow clash marks, and the reverse has several die breaks. A very important coin, within the Condition Census quality for the variety. Only two die varieties exist for 1797 dimes, and both are listed in the Red Book: the 16 star and the 13 star obverse, as here. The rarity of this variety is not fully appreciated; most are from a later die state that affects the area of the date. This has a sharp full date with no break. A piece that once owned, there will be no reason to upgrade, ever. Even the most inveterate critiquer of early U.S. coins will find nothing to fault here. A showpiece in any early a dime collection. Pop 4; 1 in 58 for the variety at NGC.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

1804 Draped Bust Dime. 14 stars. NGC graded VF-20. Light golden toning. Very rare variety. A total 8,265 dimes minted in 1804. This is an extremely important opportunity for the early dime specialist. Perhaps only about 100 examples of this date are known in all grades. Two die varieties are known for the 1804 dime coinage, with distinctly different reverse dies having either 13 stars or 14 stars. Curiously, both dies were also used for the quarter eagle series. This 14 star variety is slightly rarer than the other variety among early dimes. It is listed as Rarity 5 by Logan, this is the second use of the obverse die after 1804 JR-1 and the second use of the reverse die after 1804 Breen-1 quarter eagles. The obverse has light scratches in the surface behind the head, from the chin across the neck, and in the right obverse field from the forehead to a star. Light to medium old-silver patina with lightest color on the high points of the design. Shows few rim dentils. Tops of legends worn on the reverse. Full E PLURIBUS UNUM visible on the scroll, and a complete shield. To reiterate: a very rare opportunity for the Bust Dime specialist to acquire this elusive issue. Pop 1; 2 finer @ NGC, 1 in 40, 1 in 58 (PCGS # 4475) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.

1805 Draped Bust Dime. 4 berries. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. JR-2. Light golden toning on both sides; uncleaned attractive surfaces. The luster beams off of this handsome coin. Very popular "Type" variety. Die variety shows this as the 4 berries reverse (JR-1 having 5 berries in the branch).

After reviewing this coin carefully we believe it is undergraded by PCGS and should be sent back for a higher grade of one or two points. This coin is one of the finest we have handled.

A very choice specimen for the connoisseur of early silver issues, the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type was in use for only a short space of time between 1798 and 1807 before the design was retired (PCGS # 4477) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 22,000.

1805 Draped Bust Dime. 4 berries. PCGS graded MS-64. A gleaming early draped bust of the highest quality for this popularly collected grade. Full silvery cartwheel luster blends smoothly with the sharp highlights on the frosted surfaces and nicely struck designs. A few light roller lines or adjustment lines in the hair on the obverse is easy to overlook. The coin boasts nice fresh white luster without toning. Pop 27; 18 finer; 11 in 65; 4 in 66; 3 in 67. 1822 Capped Bust Dime. JR-1. NGC graded MS-66. NGC #1705249-002. Nicely toned with blue and gold colors. Hard to believe such a thing as a Mint State bust dime dated 1822 exists, yet even more astounding is this coin's spectacular Mint State 66 assignment by NGC, something dreams are made of! If a significantly finer example of this prized rarity in the Capped Bust series could exist, we have never heard of it. Questions about the 100,000 pieces supposedly struck in 1822 point to the possibility that some (or many) of the coins were actually dated 1821, as suggested by Breen and others; possibly only a few hundred 1822 bust dimes survive in all grades. This makes the 1822 dime a key date in this most challenging series and ranks it high in the entire run of U.S. dimes, 1796 to the present.

Shimmering golden-violet to turquoise iridescence is seen sporadically across the surface, leaving other areas brilliant on the left hand sides of the obverse and reverse. Easily the most visually arresting feature of this coin is its satiny frosted mint luster. Full swirling luster on both sides, in fact. Close inspection turns up a few hair-thin blemishes in the fields. An stand-out offering for the collector of bust dimes or, for that matter, considering this coin's value in the marketplace, for the rarities connoisseur to feast upon! Pop 1; none finer @ NGC (PCGS # 4497) .

1827 Capped Bust Dime. Rarity 2, JR-4. NGC graded MS-66. Beautiful blue obverse toning. Reflective surfaces. Smooth luster and impressive fields confirm the grade. This coinage date is the second of just four early dimes to exceed the one million coin mark with a mintage of 1,215,000 dimes. While 13 varieties are known from a combination of nine obverse and 10 reverse dies, one of these die marriages (JR-10) is only known in Proof. This JR-4 variety is the only use of the obverse die and first use of the reverse before JR-5. The reverse has a very faint die crack through RICA to the upper arrowhead. Pop 5; 2 finer in 67 (PCGS # 4504) .

1833 Capped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. JR-9. R2. Well struck and mostly toned. Ten die marriages are known for 1833 from four obverse and six reverse dies. The total coinage for the year was 485,000 coins. The new Philadelphia Mint (known as the Second Philadelphia Mint) at Chestnut and Juniper streets was finally operational, with coinage beginning in January 1833. Pop 48; 25 finer. (PCGS # 4522) .

The die crack from the left edge of the scroll through E in UNITED, which later develops into a sizeable cud, is fairly heavy and two other thinner cracks connect the scroll and lettering above.

1837 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 67. Greer-102. NGC #1727945-029. No stars on the obverse. Well struck with nice old time toning including a lovely halo around Liberty. Tied for the finest known. The other Proof 67 example of this great rarity has not seen the light of day since it appeared in a Heritage sale back in 2003. This remarkably artistic No Stars design is by assistant engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, Christian Gobrecht. He'd been employed in the establishment for several years when the chief engraver, William Kneass suffered a stroke before completing a project to redesign the capped bust coinage. Kneass stepped aside to let Gobrecht provide new dies (based on sketches by artists Thomas Sully and Titian Peale). The design features Liberty seated on a rocky outcrop supporting a shield at her side with one hand while in the other she holds a pole surmounted by a liberty cap. It is thought that about 30 Proofs in all were struck of the new design in 1837, possibly more. A fair number have been certified by the two major services pointing to the fact that these, being a novel new design, were saved by early day collectors and visitors to the mint. Some Small Date 1837 dimes parade around as Proofs, but belief is that all valid 1837 Proofs are from the Large Date die. They have a diagnostic raised die line on the reverse from the rim above the first T in STATES, as well as a faint die scratch through the ES and O in STATES OF.

A hard to believe array of rich toning hues enhance the mirror-bright surfaces of this handsome Gem Proof dime. Taking stock of another key aspect of the grade, this piece has knife-edged devices throughout, including centers and shield, rather than a soft, uneven strike most associated with the business strikes. A stellar offering for the advanced collector! Pop 2; none finer @ NGC (PCGS # 4718) .

1837 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 64. PCGS #21726234. Well struck with nice toning and full mirror surfaces. A choice mirrored and boldly made specimen that has the following indicators seen on every genuine Proof: the fine die scratch on the reverse from the rim above the first T in STATES, and a faint die line through the ES and O in STATES OF (both of which are visible with magnification). Well struck on all devices as befits a well-made Proof striking somewhat obscured on the O in ONE and bow below. A few wispy hairlines are to be expected in the fields, but we are heartened by the smooth as glass mirror field. Despite the presence of two Proofs in this sale, an usual offering for the seated Liberty dime specialist. The holder is scuffed on the reverse.

The following population figures may include resubmission, so that the actual number available in Proof is unknown to us, but we suspect that collectors won't give it a second thought but will instead award this attractive Proof 64 specimen a strong bid. 1837 Liberty Seated Dime. Large date. NGC graded MS-67. A frosty white gem. To further describe this incredibly beautiful coin we can say that it is a crisply struck coin glowing with icicle-white glow from the superb fields to all the devices. At the moment when luster is a key determinant of the grade, it goes without saying the devices should also be struck boldly by the dies. And here, the coin is bold throughout. There is even faint evidence of a die break across a portion of the obverse, although from the looks of the needle-sharp detail, the die was otherwise perfect and serviceable. A two-year Type. 1839 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-67. A frosty white gem. A near perfect coin, comparable in quality to the 1837 No Stars in similar grade just offered. Boldly struck. This lustrous example, whose snow white brilliance whirls dizzily around the surface, is a treat for sore eyes, especially if those are the eyes of an earnest individual who has been hoping to find a top-end example for a Type Set. A great deal of stress is laid on the strike detail of these, it should be pointed out, and this piece is well struck on all devices: needle-sharp stars, exceptional detail on Liberty and the shield, and the same sharp relief on the legends and wreath portions of the reverse design. All in all a fantastic specimen! Pop 14; 6 finer, 5 in 68, 1 in 68 Star (PCGS # 4571) .

1942 Mercury Dime. NGC graded Proof 68. A near perfect white gem. Proof Mercury dimes were not sold to collectors until 1936. Finally, the mint bowed to requests from collectors after it had perfected the techniques of mirror-polishing the dies. Nevertheless, throughout the small Proof production runs each year, the dies had to be reground and repolished from time to time. Pop 75; 8 finer; 7 in 68 Star; 1 in 69.
