Lot 2474
1862 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded MS-65. Attractive deep purple-gray and blue toning on both sides. The surfaces are frosty and each side has a nice veneer of patina that deepes as it comes into contact with the rims. From the gem quality luster, we next take stock of the details of the design. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was nicely brought up by the dies with only a modicum of softness on the shield. Popular Civil War date to represent the Type 3 design (double outline to the star) (PCGS # 3680) .
Estimated Value $550 - 600.

Lot 2476
1866 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 68. Star. Perhaps the finest known. Only 725 proofs struck. Wonderful blue and gold toning. A satiny frosted cameo Proof, greatly enhanced by its incredible color, the reverse shows delicate aquamarine patina in addition to the others that is very becoming. Crisply struck and problem-free, of course, considering the outstanding grade it received from the grading service. One for the connoisseur! Pop 1; none finer @ NGC (PCGS # 3716) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 20,000.

Lot 2477
1873 Nickel Three Cents. Closed 3. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant white gem with a hint of light golden toning about the borders. A satiny cameoed gem of the finest order for the Proof 65 designation. Explosive mirror reflection graces the faint champagne surfaces. Sharply struck for the date, this being one of the sharpest Proofs we have offered in awhile, easily finer in sharpness than others in similar or higher grade. Proof only, 600 pieces struck. Pop 9; 9 finer (PCGS # 3769) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,750.

Lot 2478
1865 Nickel Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Lovely toning on both sides. Only 500+ Proofs struck this first year of issue. Always a popular date (but so hard to find in Gem condition like this with strong cameo features). Pop 15; 3 finer; 2 in 67; 1 in 67 Star. (PCGS # 3761) .

Die note: All four digits in the date are repunched, with the initial, largely effaced logotype located west of the prominent date. Three-cent pieces in nickel-copper alloy were supposed to retire the unpopular 3c Fractional notes, which had been authorized by the Act of March 3, 1863. The fractional notes found their major use in post offices. One would send a letter on its way (postage was 3c then); a pack of 100 would buy a sheet of stamps. They were the smallest in size and value of any fractional notes; they quickly became dirty rags and tattered in circulation; they were easily lost. After numerous complaints, the mint finally was directed to strike this curious denomination. Their use would decline in later years as cents and five-cent pieces took hold.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1873 Nickel Three Cents. Closed 3. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Lovely light blue and lilac toning. Very attractive. A bold reminder of an earlier era in American numismatics. Today, a three-cent denomination for a coin seems almost quaint. Pop 20; none finer. (PCGS # 3769) .
