1849 N-3 R4. MS-62 Plus. Frosty bluish steel brown and chocolate with generous traces of mint red showing on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and offer excellent eye appeal. Very close to MS63. The only marks are a barely visible speck of carbon on the tip of the chin, a small stain of dark toning on the rim over star 5, and a small planchet depression on the rim under the left side of the 4 in the date, as struck. M-LDS, die state q. The reverse shows extensive die crumbling around the wreath and legend. CC#3.

The best identifying marks for this piece are a small spot of reddish brown toning under star 5 and a small spot of slightly dark toning just right of star 2. M-LDS, die state b.

Sharpness closer to mint state but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty light greenish olive and tan with hints of very faded red in protected areas of the reverse. No spots or stains, but there are a few tiny contact marks scattered about both sides. E-MDS, die state a. The blundered date feature is bold. In addition, there are very shallow low spots (caused by debris stuck on the die) at the neck and in the field behind the neck, plus a few more inside the wreath. Otherwise both sides are sharply struck.

The remainder of the planchet is smooth and free of any significant marks Glossy chocolate and medium brown delicately mottled with reddish chocolate and olive brown. Sharply struck EDS, die state a.
