1845 N-15 R4. EF-45. Choice glossy medium brown with frosty luster in protected areas and chocolate toning on the highpoints. No defects, and hints of faded mint color are peeping through from some of the protected areas. Great eye appeal. A choice cent. Tied for CC#9.

1846 N-1 R1 Repunched 18. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty dark steel brown and chocolate with gentle wisps of lighter and darker toning on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and free of any notable defects. E-MDS, die state b early. The obverse die cracks are faint, barely visible with a strong glass. Most everything is sharply struck, but stars 5, 9, 12, and 13 plus the T in CENT are all weakly struck. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 is sharp. EAC grade MS62 and tied for CC#8.

1846 N-1 R1 AU58+. Repunched 18. AU-58 Plus. Lustrous chocolate and lighter steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining on the reverse. The obverse is delicately woodgrained. The only marks are a thin, light nick off the bust tip and a short hairline scratch left of star 12. E-MDS, die state b, with slightly reflective fields on the obverse. Sharply struck except for some weakness on stars 12 & 13. Excellent eye appeal.

1846 N-1 R1 Repunched 18. AU-55. Mint state sharpness but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned frosty bluish steel brown with olive toning in protected areas. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic ticks on the obverse. Nicely struck M-LDS, die state c. The fields are slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing, and the obverse is misaligned to K-5. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 is sharp. Excellent eye appeal in spite of the retoning.

1846 N-9 R2. MS-62. Lustrous golden light brown with delicate hints of sea-green and light bluish steel overtone. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade. Would be choice except for a barely visible hairline scratch on the temple near the hair and faint traces of an old fingerprint in the obverse fields. Sharply struck very early die state, die state a. This is the earliest state seen and most of the reverse is covered with microscopic die lines. Finest known of the early die state.

The only mark visible without the aid of a strong glass is a tiny rim nick at star 5. Reddish steel brown and chocolate. EDS, die state a. Tied for CC#11 of this rare variety.

1847 N-4 R3 Repunched 18. NGC graded MS-66 Brown. Frosty light bluish steel brown with a third of the faded mint color remaining. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint luster and are essentially flawless. The only defects, and they are microscopic, are a faint nick right of the nostril, a tiny horizontal struck-through line on the upper lip, and a speck of darker toning hidden in the dentils under the 4 in the date. Great eye appeal. Sharply struck MDS, die state c. The reverse die cracks are clear and the repunching at the bottoms of the 1 & 8 is sharp. EAC grade MS63 and tied for CC#2. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Noyes photo #30064.

1847 N-12 R3 Repunched 8. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Frosty steel brown with traces of mint color remaining on the reverse. The luster is a bit subdued from a thin layer of natural oxidation that could be brushed away to bring out the underlying luster. The only marks are a light diagonal nick in the field before the mouth and a bit of dirt in the center of star 13. Late die state, die state c, with a strong rim cud right of star 9 plus smaller ones from star 12 down to below the date. Nicely struck except for the usual weakness on the coronet over LIB. The repunching inside the top of the 8 is sharp. EAC grade MS60 and tied for CC#4.

1848 N-11 R5. NGC graded MS-61 Brown. Frosty light steel brown, the obverse a shade or two darker than the reverse. Peeps of faded mint color can be found in protected areas of the reverse. The only distracting mark is a small spot of dark toning at the top of the 4, and inside this spot are two tiny scrapes that reveal lighter coppery color. The fields and protected areas are satiny and the overall eye appeal is quite nice. Rare terminal die state, die state e, with three small but clear rim cud breaks on the reverse. EAC grade net AU50+. Tied for CC#6 of the variety and tied for CC#3 among those known in the terminal die state. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
