Lot 2019
1793 C-3 R3. . EF Details Corroded. Sharpness VF35 but covered with nearly uniform light corrosion, strongest around the O in OF. No marks or verdigris, and the date and devices are quite clear in spite of the roughness. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with medium brown toning covering the highpoints. The two-tone contrast accents the details and adds to the eye appeal. EAC grade net F12.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.

Lot 2020
1794 C-4a R3 Small Edge Letters. VF-30. Very attractive glossy light olive and chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth, free of any hints of corrosion or verdigris. The only marks are a faint scuff of hairlines on the cheek and a couple barely visible contact marks on the neck. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. The strike is a bit uneven, very strong on the left sides and weaker on the right edge. Great eye appeal for the grade. Removed from an NGC slab graded EF45. This is the coin plated in the popular "Coin Values" magazine to illustrate the early half cent type.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

1794 C-9 R2. Fine-15. Ten points sharper but covered with extremely tiny nicks, none significant or at all distracting but far too many to ignore. No corrosion or verdigris. Glossy chocolate and light olive brown with a splash of reddish brown toning near the rim at the bottom of the cap and some darker chocolate brown toning at the top of the wreath. The date is bold and the legends are complete. The obverse is properly centered on the planchet while the reverse is off slightly to the bottom causing minor weakness on the denominator. MDS, Manley die state 2.0.

Lot 2024
1795 C-5b R4 Thick Planchet. Good-5. A couple points sharper but there is an old but obvious pinscratch from the bottom of the cap to the rim at the Y in LIBERTY. Glossy chocolate and lighter brown with splashes of darker olive on the lower left quadrant of the obverse. The date is faint, as usual for the thick planchet version of the variety, but it is still readable with some effort. The legends are easily readable except where weakened by the severe die break slanting across the reverse. Struck on a cut-down spoiled large cent planchet that is obviously out-of-round. Weight 116.6 grains, which is on the high end of the weight range of 98-123 grains reported by Ron Manley.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

1797 C-2 R3 Overstruck. VF-25. Choice glossy chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. No roughness or verdigris, and the only marks are a thin line at the top of the Y in LIBERTY left from undertype on the planchet and a shallow planchet chip in the dentils left of the date, both marks as struck. There is some additional undertype near the dentils at the top of the reverse as well as a thin planchet cutter mark in the dentils over TES, but the nature of the undertype is unknown (although a good guess would be a cut-down Talbot Allum & Lee cent dated 1794 or 1795). A very attractive early half cent.

Lot 2027
1797 C-3a R3 The "Low Head" variety with Plain Edge. About Good-3 Plus. The obverse is considerably sharper with a strong date and full LIBERTY, but the reverse is weaker with most of the legend outside the wreath worn away. No roughness or verdigris. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy chocolate and steel with some lighter tones in protected areas. The only mark is a struck-through line (caused by a piece of wire or thread stuck on the die) in the field above the bust. There appears to be an arc of dentils from a cut-down misstruck large cent visible in the field off the chin and in the field left of the cap, but the excessive wear makes this determination very difficult.

The only significant mark is a shallow horizontal nick on the cheek left of the nostril, and this mark may be a pre-striking planchet void. 1806 C-4 R1 Large 6 with Stems. Double Struck. PCGS graded VG-10. Rather glossy chocolate and steel brown with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints. The surfaces show some loose dirt but they are free of corrosion and have only a few minor contact marks, including a thin rim nick over the I in LIBERTY. This piece would be nothing special except for the fact it was dramatically double struck and has two dates. The initial strike was 90% off center leaving only the date and opposing TED from UNITED on the planchet. The misstruck piece was then reinserted into the press and struck properly. The complete 1806 date from the off-center impression shows clearly at the bottom of the lowest curl while the opposing TED shows at the tops of NITE. The reverse is also rotated 80 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot orientation, but rotations such as this are not uncommon for the variety. A really neat mint error. EAC grade VG8. The off-center double strike feature is noted on the PCGS label.

1825 C-1 R3. AU-50. Frosty light olive and tan with faded mint color showing in some of the protected areas. The only defect is a small planchet void at the dentils right of the F in OF, as struck. Sharply struck E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late or 2.0 early, in which the faint obverse die crack reaches the curl on the neck but there is no lump between the bases of the F and adjacent A (the so-called "egg" clashmark). I have seen a few in this intermediate die state and call it Manley state 1.5 for simplicity. Of course such a finely delineated die state assessment would not be possible on a worn example, but this one is quite sharp. An important piece for the die state specialist, apparently quite rare.

1837 Half Cent Token Low-49 Rulau HT-73. AU-58. Frosty medium brown and steel with golden tan faded down from mint color in some of the protected areas. A choice example, very close to mint state. Actually a Hard Times Token but this is the only half cent denomination in that series and it is the same size as a half cent of that day. Since no Federal half cents were struck with that date, collectors have commonly collected these are part of the regular half cent series. In fact, many of the early coin collecting boards had a spot for this 1837 token and the "Redbook" lists it in the half cent section. A very nice example of this popular issue.
