Mexico - Veracruz (Zongolica). 8 Reales, 1812. Burzio-907; KM-255. Struck in Silver. A one year issue Royalist type coin. Of the highest rarity and the key type coin for the War of Independence coinage, with four examples known. One legend reading: 'VIVA FERNANDO VII y AMERICA". Issued from a small town in Vera Cruz province under the auspices of two Catholic priests, Don Mariano de las Fuentes Alarcon and Don Juan Moctezuma Cortez. The said priests had amassed monetary backing from tobacco confiscated in the capture of the city of Orizaba. Effectively bearing military status, began minting their own coins. Only the 8 and 2 Reales are known today. This example is plated in "el Diccionario de la Moneda Hispano-Americana", 1956 by Humberto Burzio. This is the Burzio plate coin #907. (The plate Burzio #906, realized $57,200 June 3, 1996, in the Spink-America sale, and is now housed in a museum). This leaves only three examples available to private hands, with this being one. This example Burzio #907, was last publically sold over 35 years ago in the Superior Sale of November 1971, lot #1808. Excessively Rare. NGC graded VF-35.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.
