Jewish lead tokens are providing greater numismatic knowledge than ever before imagined. David Hendin has authored some fascinating information about these exonomic treasures in INJ 13 and in The Celator, the premier monthly periodical of ancient numismatics published in the U.S. The importance of these lead tokens is suggested in Hendin's third edition of his guide on pages 86-87.

Aelia Capitolina. Antoninus Pius, 138-161 C.E. AE 24. . Mesh. ("Aelia") 24. Laureate and draped bust right of Antoninus Pius. Reverse: Dionysos standing, looking right. Very Fine.

At the end of the Bar Kokhba War, Jerusalem was renamed Aelia Capitolina. The most recent reference on coins of this city was written by the renown numismatist Ya'akov Meshorer and published in 1989 by The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Of great value as well is the 1956 volume by L. Kadman, The Coins of Aelia Capitolina, which is volume I of the Corpus Nummorum Palestinensium series.

Ascalon. Antoninus Pius, 138-161 C.E. AE 20 minted 151/2 C.E. . Rosenberger III, supp. 29. Laureate head right of Antoninus Pius. Reverse: Tyche standing left. Nearly Extremely Fine.

The four Rosenberger volumes are milestones in the study of Jewish city coinage. While there are numerous errors, poor photos, and organizational difficulties (plus the bindings are terrible!), they still form major references for the series. Sadly, they have been out of print for a long while; an updated version would be happily received by the numismatic community.
Estimated Value $175 - 275.

Capitolias. Geta, 209-212 C.E. AE 26 dated year 108 (204/5 C.E.). . Spij. 20. Ros. 14. Bare-headed and cuirassed bust right of Geta. Reverse: Bust of Alexander the Great right. Large flan; Choice Very Fine.

The Rosenberger reference doesn't identify the reverse portrayal ("Bust r., draped"), while the Spijkerman volume states "Bust of Alexander r." The future emperor Severus Alexander wasn't born until c. 208 C.E., so he meant Alexander the Great, which is a highly unusual type for city coinage, but nevertheless was used at Capitolias under Commodus. This would explain the reference to Macedon in the inscription.

Aelia Capitolina. Macrinus, 217-8 C.E. Billon Tetradrachm (11.93g). . Prieur 1642. Laureate head right of Macrinus. Reverse: Eagle to front standing on thyrsos, wine jar between legs; in exergue, ivy leaf. Choice Very Fine.

The Syro-Phoenician Tetradrachms and their Fractions from 57 BC to AD 253, by Michel and Karin Prieur, is an excellent example of how a first-rate academic treatise can be easily utilized and enjoyably read, as well. It was edited by friend and numismatist Italo Vecchi, and beautifully produced in 2000 by Classical Numismatic Group ("CNG"). The opus is detailed and capably organized, placing and dating these heretofore enigmatic issues.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.

Aelia Capitolina. Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus, d. 217 C.E. AE 16. . Mesh. ("Aelia") 83. Kadman 39. Draped bust right of Julia Domna. Reverse: Nemesis standing left. Choice Very Fine.

Nemesis is the Greek goddess associated with rightful retribution. On this reverse she is seen holding her chiton open in order to spit upon her breast (her standard gesture of aversion); a wheel, symbolizing "what goes around comes around", is at her feet. It reminds the cataloguer of the wonderful pre-federal American coppers of Dr. Samuel Higley and his brother John. Readers may remember with fondness the inscriptions on these very rare tokens dated 1737: "Value me as you please", "I am good copper", "I cut my way through", and most appropriately for our goddess Nemesis, "The wheele goes round". It still does today.

Charachmoba. Elagabalus, 218-222 C.E. AE 18. . Spij. 5. Mesh 275 (this coin). Laureate head right of Elagabalus. Reverse: Altar of Dusares approached by steps; sacred stones on altar; priest to right. Fine to Very Fine.

The coinage of Charachmoba (today's Kerak) was in production solely during the reign of Elagabalus (218-222 C.E.). It is one of the very rarest cities from which to have a numismatic representation. This one is particularly worthwhile because of its fascinating reverse type as well as its pedigree, being the illustrated example in Meshorer's book, City-Coins of Eretz-Israel and the Decapolis in the Roman Period.
