Overstruck on a Roman denarius of Galba, originally minted 65 years earlier! These understrikes give us much information concerning the length of time ancient coins circulated, which is a very long time indeed.

Perhaps overstruck on a Roman denarius of Titus. Mildenberg 152 and 153 are very close in appearance; they share both obverse and reverse dies. The main difference is that on Mild 153 the die-break between and to the right of the trumpets has advanced, and some letters have been improved by recutting.

Lot 2662
AR Denar (2.23g) attributed to year 3 (134/5 C.E.). . Hen-734 var. Most likely, the only one of its kind known. Cf. Mild reverse die 120. Blank (vestiges of host coin's portrait visible). Reverse: Kithara with three strings. Striking crack, resulting in a small natural hole; Very Fine.

A most unusual error. The grape obverse die (lower one) had not been inserted and therefore the flan was solely restruck by the upper or reverse die. Since this reverse die, Mild die #120, was paired with both obverse dies 22 and 24, we are unsure if this partial striking should be described as Mild 186 or 208. A most fascinating coin!
Estimated Value $700 - 1,100.

Lot 2663
Fourrée Denar (2.85g) attributed to year 3 (134/5 C.E.). . Hen-734. . AJC 57a. Mild 176 [only 6 examples cited]. Triform bunch of grapes. Reverse: Kithara with three strings. Nearly Extremely Fine.

Fourrées are ancient falsifications, usually made outside the official mint in order to deceive the unwary. In this case, the host coin (probably a Roman denarius) was manufactured as a copper coin having a silver jacket to give it the "look" of full-weight and fineness. This ancient counterfeit was then restruck by the Bar Kokhba rebels. Upon resting in the soil for nearly two millenia, the thin silver coating was partially eaten away, more fully exposing the copper core, mainly at the periphery. As Bar Kokhba understrikes, fourrées are very rarely seen.

While this is a relatively common die pairing, nevertheless the number of available specimens of even a type coin on the market at any one time is limited. Once this advanced collection is dispersed, opportunities will be felt to have been missed. Certainly one of the strengths of the Levin Collection is its substantial depth within the coinage of the Bar Kokhba War. To the cataloguer's knowledge, there are only four collections by Mildenberg number in existence today which are as complete as this present one, now being offered.
