Reverse: Kithara with three strings. Striking crack, resulting in a small natural hole; Very Fine. A most unusual error. The grape obverse die (lower one) had not been inserted and therefore the flan was solely restruck by the upper or reverse die. Since this reverse die, Mild die #120, was paired with both obverse dies 22 and 24, we are unsure if this partial striking should be described as Mild 186 or 208. A most fascinating coin! Lot 2663		Fourrée Denar (2.85g) attributed to year 3 (134/5 C.E.). . Hen-734. . AJC 57a. Mild 176 [only 6 examples cited]. Triform bunch of grapes. Reverse: Kithara with three strings. Nearly Extremely Fine. Fourrées are ancient falsifications, usually made outside the official mint in order to deceive the unwary. In this case, the host coin (probably a Roman denarius) was manufactured as a copper coin having a silver jacket to give it the "look" of full-weight and fineness. This ancient counterfeit was then restruck by the Bar Kokhba rebels. Upon resting in the soil for nearly two millenia, the thin silver coating was partially eaten away, more fully exposing the copper core, mainly at the periphery.
