Mattathias Antigonus, 40-37 B.C.E. AE 22. . Hen-481. . Mesh1 30. Double cornucopiae. Reverse: Ivy wreath. Nearly Extremely Fine.

This is a significant series, as it is the first example of large, heavy coins struck by a Jewish ruler. Including several denominations, this is a particularly handsome specimen of what Y. Meshorer postulated as being equal to eight prutot; it is the largest of the types.

Lot 2396
Mattathias Antigonus, 40-37 B.C.E. AE Prutah (14mm). . Hen-485. . Cf. AJC pl.55, group Z. The Showbread Table, consisting of a flat board supported by four legs. Reverse: The Temple Menorah. Choice Very Fine.

This coin is extremely rare, and particularly desirable as the centering is excellent, as is the boldness of strike. It seems likely that this type served more as a special issue of some sort rather than a coin seen in daily transactions. During the Second Temple period, depictions of these, the most sacred vessels within the Temple, were prohibited.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 35,000.
