Lot 2384
Gaza. Athenian Imitative Coinage, c. 400-332 B.C.E. AR Obol (0.78g). . Hen-424. . Ros. 7. Helmeted head right of Athena. Reverse: Owl standing right; "mem" in field to lower right. Extremely Fine.

Athenian coinage circulated all over the Greek world. Because of their purity and adherance to proper weight standards, these popular trade coins were issued in large numbers and are today found in far-flung hoards. In fact, more have been unearthed in Egypt than in any other locales. What makes this obol so important to the collector is the mintmark, the key-letter of the local god Marnas, so central to the people of Gaza that they adopted the letter "mem" for their mintmark. We will see this mintmark time and time again on the later city coinage of this important caravan city.
Estimated Value $700 - 1,100.
