Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1753
1890 $20 Liberty. Details of Proof 63. Brilliant Proof. We suspect the mirror surfaces have been enhanced. Only 55 Proofs struck for this low mintage date. Conceivably, fewer than half of the those examples survive today, with a total population certainly under 20. This still attractive Proof 63 is an amazing bit of sharp design, and impressive with aesthetic appeal after all these years. At first glance, no one will suspect that anything is wrong. The devices on both sides seem to be frosted with hardly a blemish to be seen, although the cheek has a few faint hairlines. The fields still sparkle in their mirrors. Worth examining (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

1890-CC $20 Liberty. AU-50. Light hairlines but otherwise relatively clean, mar-free surfaces with amble luster. 1890-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely original orange and golden toning on both sides. Approximately half the census in MS63 as the preceding 1889-S in this grade, thereby earning a premium price. If a collector studies this double eagle for some time, his thoughs focused on the surfaces, the color, the strike, and overall pleasant lustrous appearance, a soft voice will soon speak into his ear that now rather than later is the time to place a bid. 1891-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Mostly untoned with semi reflective surfaces. We are always meeting dates in this series that cause us to pause, and this attractive, flashy example is just such a coin. It is generally well made, and decidedly well preserved with only minor bagmarks. It has sparkle. It has the cache of PCGS, attesting to the choice quality. And no spots or deep marks, either, to influence bidders to modify their bids. Pop 572; 65 in 64, none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 9018) .

1891-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. A choice frosty mint example exhibiting full mint bloom. Resplendent surfaces that are thoroughly frosted with keen-edged, satin-finish luster spiraling outward from the centers. Full cartwheel effect. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are detailed and close to 100% crisp for their sharpness of strike, which is a forceful reminder in a coin from this mint that it is quality that matters (PCGS # 9018) .

1892-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice even light golden toning on both sides. Few contact marks (and these barely noticeable) on the cheek and below Liberty's eye; quite choice for the grade. A collector on the hunt for a close-to-gem quality Liberty twenty can be stirred easily by this handsome 1892-S. The luster, bright and gurgling as though heaving up through a fissure in a volcano, seems to ripple the air with its brilliance. Since our observation is that this date is nearly always fully struck, then this sharp MS64 has every suggestion of precision manufacture as seen in the key devices, the stars, and all letters in the legends. Pop 65; 1 in 65, none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 9021) .

1893-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. Only 18,402 coins minted. Natural golden toning on both sides, there is a small mark on Liberty's throat area, another on the cheek, and a few luster "grazes" in the frost of the open field. The 1893-CC is the swan song issue of the Carson City Mint. The government (under the second Cleveland administration) had reached a point where the expense charts sloped sharply upward, and so decided to trim the budget. Carson was on the front line of this budget-cutting. All the same, this mint's double eagle coinage circulated extensively in the West and also was used in the export trade, probably mostly the latter. Today, Mint State coins are only occasionally found (though not considered rare, per se). Most pieces are very attractive to collectors. The low mintage of 1893-CC has always made this a popular issue. Pop 112; 114 finer, 94 in 62, 19 in 63, 1 in 64 (PCGS # 9023) .

Then perhaps this (or one of the other pieces from the collection) will fit the bill. 1894-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely gold and orange toning on both sides. Well struck and choice for the grade. For that matter, "choice" may be too tame a word for this glowing specimen. This sort of coin makes a collector feel -- we don't know how to put it -- maybe "elated" is the right word. Certainly for an 1894-S double eagle it is among an elite few in its grade class. 1895-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice even light golden toning. A mark on the obverse at Liberty's cheek and chin, otherwise this coin should be a gem. Well struck and choice. Take a minute to pause and scan your vision across the surface: Luster everywhere, and swirling, satin-fresh. We are in a sympathetic mood with all the unsuccessful bidders once this fine piece sells to the highest bid. For in this case, as in the other S-mint twenties from the group of choice specimens in the sale, there are few available for the ever-expanding number of collectors. 1896-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Light golden toning. Another prized, high-quality $20 gold piece. 1897-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely original golden toning on both sides. Another choice example for the grade. Under natural light as well as viewed with a Halogen lamp, this coin has a warm glistening look to it. 1898 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Only 75 proofs struck. A nice brilliant example. Official Mint records list 75 Proof double eagle struck 1898. We have no reason to doubt this figure, but find it unlikely that even as many as one-half the mintage is left in collectors' hands. With Proof issues of virtually all other denominations produced in 1898, the $20 had an often strong cameo appearance. Both sides are glisten in fresh yellow-gold color that yields to a pale orange tone in the fields at indirect angles. The devices are fully struck up and sharp edged including all lettering. Perhaps needless to say for a very choice cameo Proof gold coin, the eye appeal is extraordinary. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 89114) .

1900-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-64. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides. Often, bidders meet with conflicting problems on these heavy, soft gold coins. However, the present 1900-S $20 escaped anything that might advise against bidding. Bright luster seems to be having the best of the struggle for your attention over the golden toning it is competing with. (Though strength of detail in the strike competes gallantly.) Finally, a keen analytical sense tells double eagle buyers this S-mint date is much scarcer in its grade than several others in the post-turn-of-the-century years. Scarce date in grades above MS 63. 1901-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely light golden toning on both sides. Very choice for the grade. Among dates in the early 20th century, the 1901-S (1.6 million mintage) is easy to overlook since the low-mintage P-mint version gets the attention. All the same, choice to gem specimens of '01-S are, quite naturally, scarce, as the census again proves. It is too long to tell about all of this coin's positive features and genuine virtues, but the photographs come a long way to giving a true impression. Pop 78; 1 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 9040) .

1902-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Old green holder. Nice light original golden toning on both sides. As we stated about the 1901-S $20, the same goes for 1902-S (1.75 million mintage): few are around in choice condition, most that are offered tend to be bagmarked or have scuffs on the cheek. Just out of the starting gate this piece displays above-average vibrant luster and sharp details. It stands alone (well, almost alone) in its grade. That said, conversation and emotion have made the $20 Liberty series a tough nut to crack for the serious date collector, but nearly every expert will agree the '02-S offered here has an edge over most in its grade class. 1904 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. A well struck example with intense flashy mirror surfaces with excellent contrast. Only 98 minted. The 1904 is a rare striking in Proof format, struck four years before the end of the Liberty head format was replaced. There is no way of knowing the exact survival ratio of Proof 1904 double eagles, one may guess but never be certain. However, it is presumably very small, as Proof $20 coins were sometimes spent by unemployed collectors in the worst period of the Great Depression. This is a deeply reflective example that shows light cameo contrast against the frosted devices. Only the slightest hairlines are visible and confirm the grade.

We have only handled relatively few 1904 Proof gold twenties, are always pleased and exited to describe one for you. An opportunity for coin collectors to acquire this seldom-seen Proof (PCGS # 9120) .

Pop 10; 1 finer in 64 (PCGS # 9047) .

Coming off record mintage in 1904 (and for that matter, 1904-S), the Philadelphia Mint went on hiatus in 1905 when coinage of $20 gold plummeted. It left the bulk of coining this denomination to San Francisco to do, while attending to other matters. Philadelphia would recover again in 1907, but 1906, too, saw low mintage.
