$20 Gold Liberty

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1736
1878-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Rich golden toning on both sides. Light bagmarks on the obverse (cheek, nose and field before the face). But these are easily overlooked. Late in the 1870s the Mint ramped up production of gold as the economy stabilized after the inflationary fiat-money period (1861-77) ended. Of the approximately 1.8 million 1878-S $20 gold pieces minted, most are in circulated grades (those that weren't melted). Choice examples, as the following census shows, are in the scarce category. Pop 64; 7 in 63; 2 in 64 (PCGS # 8987) .
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,500.

1879 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck with intense frosty mint surfaces and delicately toned. There are several light bagmarks including one below the 9th star. A decidedly rare coin in this high grade, which the census verifies in stark detail: Pop 6, none better (PCGS # 8988) .

1880-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Lovely original golden toning on both sides. Another outstanding MS62 example almost drowning in fresh luster from top to bottom. Lot 1741
1881-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Original light golden toning on both sides. It will be worth it to pay your dues and submit a strong bid on this handsome '81-S Lib. It has perfect summer evening golden toning, almost too beautiful to describe; the clear photographs barely do it justice, though they are first-rate all the same, with only the usual medium size scuffs (before the face) and bagmarks (on nose and cheek) area precluding a higher designation. Pop 73; 16 in 63, 1 in 64 (PCGS # 8995) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.

1883-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. Somewhat bagmarked, and there are minor rim problems. Lightly worn on the obverse highpoints of the hair curls and bun, with nearly full luster, this pleasing Choice About Uncirculated double eagle displays bright golden color. One of the more available Carson City double eagles, this '83-CC is all the same an attractive, affordable example. Pop 92; 118 finer; the best is 2 in MS-63 at PCGS. (PCGS # 8999) .

Although stories of lost Spanish mines and secret Navajo mines in the Great Basin area of Utah and Nevada persist to this day, the first gold rush in southeastern Utah began in 1883, they year of this double eagle, after Cass Hite found placer gold in Glen Canyon on the Colorado River. On December 3, 1883, Hite, Lewis P. Brown, and seven others organized the Henry Mountains Mining District. Unfortunately, the gold found by prospectors along the Colorado River was very fine, making it extremely difficult to recover, although some of it may have eventually worked its way to the Carson City Mint to be struck into gold pieces like this 1883-CC.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,300.

1887-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Light orange and gold toning. The frosty luster blows patiently over the detailed features as well as wafts across the entire surface on both sides. Normal light bagmarks. A scarcer S-mint date with only 283,000 minted. From this population, the grading service reports a shriveling census: Pop 182; 49 in 63, 3 in 64, and 1 in 65 (PCGS # 9007) .

Lot 1752
1889-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely golden toning on both sides. Somewhat higher population in this grade than a few others struck at San Francisco in the 1880s, yet in stronger demand. The luster streams right up to the embankment of the rims on both sides. It is as if it the rims were having trouble stemming the golden tide. Even when a viewer holds the coin at a distance looking across the river of gold, mysterious emanations seems to stream off its beautiful surface. Pop 247; 8 in 64 none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 9012) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
