Lot 1686
1850-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Plenty of luster still present. Rare date in such high grade. There are several old marks on the chin and cheek, with the usual light surface abrasions from its brief period in circulation. Luster streams from the hair waves and in the protected areas of the ornate eagle and shield, this being designer James Longacre's famous Type 1 design without the motto. Pop 17; 12 in 55; 6 in 58. 1857-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Well struck with traces of luster within the protected areas. We note a tiny area of a tar spot (or other foreign substance) hidden within Liberty's central hair. Rare. Particularly in such high grade. Despite a mintage of 30,000 pieces very few 1857-O double eagles exist today, probably fewer than 150 all told. Most are graded Very Fine or Extremely Fine.

Researchers place the 1857-O in the category of seventh rarest of 12 New Orleans double eagles in terms of overall rarity (eighth in high grade rarity). It is slightly more available than the 1858-O in About Uncirculated. Uncommonly well struck, there is little evidence of the striking softness one expects of this issue. Pop 6; 12 in 55; 5 in 58; 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8921) .

1860-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Loaded with luster and only scattered bagmarks on the face and in the reverse field. Far fewer marks than usual for the Type 1 series, which ran from 1850 to 1866 and lacks IN GOD WE TRUST on the coin. While the East Coast of the United States was feeling the first effects of dis-Union in 1860, out West everything was hunkydory, life went on as usual, gold circulated (wasn't hoarded as it was in the East), and San Francisco kept turning out these beautiful twenty dollar Liberties. However, many were eventually melted, if not in the later 19th century, then after 1930s. Pop 26; 29 finer. (PCGS # 8931) .

Lot 1704
1866-S $20 Liberty. No motto. PCGS graded AU-58. A few obverse bag marks, otherwise Mint State. The year 1866 was one of transition in silver coins. Patriotic zeal arising out of the trauma of Civil War gave birth to calls for a new religious motto to be added to the original E PLURIBUS UNUM that had been on coins ever since Colonial times. In 1861, 1862, and 1863, two variations on a new motto were used on Pattern coins. The first, GOD OUR TRUST, was abandoned; the more rhythmical IN GOD WE TRUST was an improvement and was included on the new two-cent pieces in 1864 and shield nickels introduced in 1866. The Act of March 3, 1865 included a clause mandating this motto. However, it took the Philadelphia Mint several months to add it to the production dies. (Philadelphia makes dies for the branch mints). For this reason, a few No Motto twenty-dollar gold pieces were made at San Francisco before the new IN GOD WE TRUST reverse dies arrived. The present No Motto coin is one of an estimated 12,000 struck. Not many are featured in auctions, and these are usually worn pieces. Among the finest known: Pop 3; 1 finer in 60 (PCGS # 8945) .
Estimated Value $70,000 - 80,000.

1866-S $20 Liberty. With motto. NGC graded AU-58. Breen-7222. All have a small S mintmark. "Prohibitively rare AU." Untoned. Very scarce date in high grade. An incredibly smooth and delicately lustrous example of this rare No Motto design, and a benchmark for other examples that share About Uncirculated 58 grade. This is something of a transition year where the mint, before receiving the new IN GOD WE TRUST reverses from the Philadelphia Mint, went ahead and struck a small number of $20 gold pieces from the Type 1 reverse (without motto). The strike is bold and crisp on this piece, unlike some that come to market from time to time that are not quite so full. As such it stands head and shoulders above the others, with nothing left to the viewer's imagination. The photographs reveal all; and what they reveal is a very splendid example of this key issue. Pop 129; 35 finer, 16 in 60, 18 in 61, 1 in 62 (PCGS # 8950) .

There is a thin, extensive die crack on the obverse connecting several stars and just touching the highest pearl on Liberty's coronet of 13 pearls.

1868 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. In PCGS holder 07341536. Only 25 minted. A truly splendid, glittering Proof twenty, comparable in quality to any date from the turn-of-the-century, and even more noteworthy in coming with the date 1868. Even acute examination reveals only the slightest flaws: a group of three tiny flakes in the obverse field near the point of Liberty's bust. The surface of this handsome Proof displays lovely orange-gold color. Furthermore, the two-tone contrast is a sheer delight to examine on each side. For the collector who desires the ultimate in technical workmanship, regardless of grade then the collector will find real value in this Proof double eagle. We expect to sea a strong price when sold.

Of the few Proofs coins struck this year, probably fewer than 12 remain in collections in all grades. Only a few 1868 Proofs ever come to market. With growing cadres of prospective new collectors, the thinning supply will only drive things to a more frenetic level in years to come. Pop 2; None finer. (PCGS # 89083) .

1868-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Nice original peach-orange toning on both sides. Well struck, quite choice and a Premium Quality coin for the grade. Consistent with many S-mint dates in the post-Civil War era, the 1868-S is sometimes overlooked and is definitely an underrated coin in mint condition. The fact is, this handsome MS62 is the only one so graded by PCGS! Moreover, it offers the viewer original mint color and luster whose deep golden-orange patina shines with considerable effect, especially where it counts. Adequately struck, as always seen (sharp strikes are almost never encountered, even when circulated), there are a few slight abrasions present for the grade. Obviously destined for a home in a museum-class set of early twenties. Pop 1; Finest graded at PCGS (PCGS # 8954) .

1869 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Nice and frosty with the usual assortment of light abrasions associated with this grade. Here is a very scarce type and a date for the collector to find in Mint condition. The surfaces are typical for the issue as virtually every double eagle issued in 1869 was transferred several times between banks. They are nearly always found baggy or in circulated condition. Note the detail, however, of Liberty's hair and the coronet. Importantly, the strike is fairly sharp on the eagle as well, adding yet another positive feature. Pop 8; 13 finer (PCGS # 8955) .

1869-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Breen-7232. A frosty untoned coin with unparalleled brilliance for this very scarce issue, smooth and satiny it is. Use this piece as a guidpost when comparing other Type 2 double eagles in its grade. The take would be difficult, be we could see a collector assembling a set of twenties from the period with this coin's smooth originality. A very rare coin in Mint State. Pop 9; 5 finer in 64 (PCGS # 8956) .

Mintage: 686,750. The 1869-S is plentiful enough in circulated grades to supply collectors on moderate budgets. In the absence of known hoards of significance, Mint State coins are very rare. Most important collections of the last hundred years had VF or EF specimens.
