Lot 1424
1836 Pattern Dollar. Silver, plain edge. . J-60. . P-65. PCGS graded Proof 62, Rarity 1. Original example with a hint of light toning. This is a splendid silver gray specimen with a faint golden zephyr-like veil of iridescence on both sides. Well struck for the popular 1836 name on base variety, certainly much better-quality than similar third-party graded examples offered in recent years; we find it worthy of strong bidder attention. Pop 33; 34 finer, 22 in 63, 12 in 64 (PCGS # 11225) .

The name of Christian Gobrecht, the third person to occupy the post of chief engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, is well known to collectors today and is reflected in such popular terms as Gobrecht dollar and The Gobrecht Journal, the latter being the publication of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club. Among Pattern coins his contributions are at once important, beautiful, and extensive. Most familiar are his seated Liberty coins, first made in the form of this 1836 silver dollar.
Estimated Value $21,000 - 23,000.

Lot 1425
1836 Pattern Dollar. Silver, plain edge. . J-60. . P-65. PCGS graded Proof 55. Well struck with nice even grey toning. A small mark in the field near the elbow. Razor-sharp feathers on the eagle. Restrike. From the standpoint of Gobrecht dollars issued for circulation, the 1836 with C. GOBRECHT F. on the base, with plain edge, and with starry reverse field (Judd-60), is a prime candidate for inclusion in any set of regular silver dollars. The design is first-class, indeed genuinely stunning in its beauty; the artistry an immeasurable improvement over prior U.S. coin designs. Pop 10; 72 finer (PCGS # 11227) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 20,000.

1862 Pattern Eagle. Copper, reeded edge. . J-297. . P-355. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. A pleasing example housed in a first generation holder. Luminous copper-brown surfaces typical of this well-made Pattern. Desirable with this precision strike on Liberty's coronet, hair, hair bun, and the surrounding stars. Similar precise detail found on the eagle, shield, and legends. Judd-297 is from the regular dies for the gold $10 this year, but the reverse has the motto GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll above the eagle. (Some Judd-297 pieces are on "bronzed" planchets.) Pop 9; 5 in 65. Low Rarity 6 (PCGS # 60447) .

1872 Pattern Commercial Dollar. Copper, plain edge. Rarity 8. . J-1217. . P-1358. NGC graded Proof 65 Brown Cameo. Housed in NGC holder 1551420-001. Exquisite Gem Proof with gorgeous multi-color toning. The surfaces exhibit a blending of violet and purple hues on both sides. Pop 1, none finer. (this is the same coin shown in the PCGS report). Apparently, the first time this coin has appeared at auction since we sold it in June 1977 which was prior to the establishment of the grading services.

So ends the discussion of the color and resplendent state of preservation of the surfaces. Now on to the detail. And what remarkable detail this rare piece has to offer: this lovely Judd-1217 Commercial Dollar is not just close to, but completely and sharply struck, with terrific definition at Liberty seated as an Indian Princess (so-called by early day connoisseurs of the Type). Two flags stick out behind her, while Liberty rests her hand on a globe of the world inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. In her other hand she holds a staff on which is tipped a liberty cap. This is William Barber's rendition of a design first created by James B. Longacre, Barber's predecessor as chief engraver at the mint. The way that we can tell this is Barber's work is that there are 13 stars on the flag instead of Longacre's 22. On the reverse is the Commercial Dollar type introduced in 1871. COMMERCIAL DOLLAR 420 GRS. 900 FINE lie within an olive wreath. GOD OUR TRUST on a ribbon uniting the branches below; UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above the wreath (PCGS # 61488) .

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1276. . P-1418. NGC graded Proof 64 Rarity 4. Light blue and lilac toning. Popular Barber design in an old holder. A gorgeous near-gem of the finest order for its Proof 64 designation. The highly lustrous, mirror-flash surfaces exhibit mingled toning hues as described. Boldly struck as well, in fact fully so, it deserves special mention here. Those who take the time to scan the photographs of these will see that our consignor had a consistent eye for quality, beauty, and marvelous toning in his choice of Pattern Trade dollars. Avail yourselves of his good judgment by buying one or more of these! Pop 3; 6 in 65 (PCGS # 61561) .

Historic Note: In this year Dr. Henry R. Linderman was appointed Director of the Mint and Assay offices of the United States by President Grant. He had largely been responsible for writing and securing the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which abolished the old silver dollar, half dime and three-cent silver piece and authorized the trade dollar. Dr. Linderman had projected the "trade dollar" as a means of finding a market in the oriental countries for our great surplus of silver. Hence, it is not surprising that a large number of trade dollar Patterns appeared at this time.

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1281. . P-1423. NGC graded Proof 65 Rarity 4. Light gold and blue toning. Housed in an old holder. An hard to believe array of supporting mint flash brightens the colorful highlights. Nicely struck with the design comparable to the best preserved specimens of this Judd variety. If you have been flipping through the pages of Judd in a perfunctory manner when studying these intriguing Pattern Trade dollars, then a glance at the Judd-1281 listing will give a short background description but little in the way of the scarcity of the Type in Gem Proof condition. That is where the grading census enters the picture: Pop 4; 2 finer at NGC (PCGS # 61566) .

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1293. . P-1435. NGC graded Proof 64 Rarity 4. Housed in an old holder. Lovely gold and lilac toning. Basking under original toning, the reflective luster supports satiny-surface main devices. A sharp strike is seen at all the stars as well as Liberty's gown and the globe at her side, clearly the dies were spaced at the correct distance to impart strong metal flow in these area; the reverse details are similarly resplendent. Very scarce. Pop 6; 4 in 65 (PCGS # 61578) .

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1310. . P-1453. NGC graded Proof 65 Rarity 4. Popular Barber's Indian Princess in an old holder. Light blue with gold toning. William Barber, in taking a page out of the deceased James B. Longacre's book, modified Longacre's Indian Princess for this engagingly beautiful rendition of a Trade Dollar. Sadly, it never went beyond the pattern stage. A first-rate gem, the coin is permeated with rich colors and rolling mirror sparkle that flows across the fresh surfaces. Satisfactorily struck for the date, too, and in fact about as excellent as this scarce Pattern is ever found, the coin's designer would have been proud to stand at the podium alongside the smiling, effervescent auctioneer as this is offered to today's auction buyers. Pop 1; 2 finer in 66, none finer at NGC (PCGS # 61596) .

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1322. . P-1465. NGC graded Proof 65 Rarity 4. Nice blue and gold toning. Housed in an old holder. Here, too, we are pleased to describe a wonderful Pattern trade dollar of the finest order whose explosive mirror luster adorns the well toned surfaces. Piercingly sharp for a Proof 65 coin, it is easily finer in sharpness than many in nominally higher grade Patterns of its vintage. Well worth the extra effort involved in acquiring ownership since it appears in Gem quality only on rare occasions. Witness the low census: Pop 5; 1 in 66, none finer at NGC (PCGS # 61608) .

1879 Pattern Dime. Copper, reeded edge. . J-1585. . P-1778. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red High Rarity 6. Popular washlady head housed in an old green label holder. Nice red color. This is the oddly nicknamed and popular "Washlady" or Society Lady design described after the matronly female portrait on the obverse. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, the coin is a splendid Proof 64 example featuring mirrored obverse and reverse fields around lustrous devices. Both sides have wonderful brilliance. Like the silver version of this design, between 12 and 15 examples are believed to survive in copper. This example is most attractive. Pop 1; 2 in 66 RD, only 3 graded in total at NGC (PCGS # 81962) .

1879 Pattern Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1613. . P-1809. PCGS graded Proof 64 Low Rarity 7. Nice blue and gold toning on both sides. Silver reeded edge housed in an old green label holder. One of the scarcer Patterns using the same obverse as the regular Morgan dollar of the date, as intended for Proofs, but with a tall and narrow perched eagle reverse design type. An swirling array of toning hues on both sides of this bold Pattern. The devices are frosted underneath the iridescence, with the mirrors nicely reflective and supportive. Morgan's is one of several proposals to replace the adopted eagle as it appears on the circulation strike silver dollar. A very rare Pattern $1 with unmistakable originality; virtually gem quality surfaces. Who could ask for more? Pop 3; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 61991) .
