Morgan Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1357
1879-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Deep Prooflike. A nice white example. The '79-CC Morgan dollar is a low mintage date with only 756,000 pieces struck. When located, survivors tend to exhibit strong eye appeal, like this flashy piece. The fields have a bright prooflike resiliency while the devices are heavily frosted, giving the coin its two-tone or "cameo" effect noticeable in the photographs. Boldly struck throughout and gleaming white there is not one hint of toning around the rims, nor are there any heavy bagmarks or spots to affect your appreciation of it. A few slight field tics on the snowy white portrait barely intrude on the frosty complexion of the cheek; surely many viewing this coin would place it in the Gem category. Pop 11; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 7086) .
Estimated Value $16,000 - 18,000.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. Capped die. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty and untoned. Brilliant with frosty white devices and a no sign of a reflective sheen found on a number of the prooflikes this year. We do note a small area on Liberty's cheek where the luster is lightly touched by bag-contact with others in the bag; the reverse is especially attractive, virtually pristine. Struck from a die in which the mintmark is overpunched, resulting in a slightly blurred appearance (PCGS # 7088) .

1884-S Morgan Dollar. MS-60 Plus. Well struck and lustrous with virtually full breast feathers. Lightly tarnished due to an old fingerprint. This strictly uncirculated example might benefit if properly dipped. In the 1960s the Treasury Department released millions of Brilliant Uncirculated silver dollars. There were no 1884-S pieces found. In 1976, Revere Redfield's treasure trove of 475,000+ dollars entered the market. Again, no 1884-S. In 1984, Continental Illinois Bank in Chicago had to be rescued by federal bailout. Upwards of 1.5 million silver dollars were found in its vaults, mainly 1881-S common dates! But, no 1884-S. For some inexplicable reason virtually all 1884-S Morgan Dollars went into circulation (PCGS # 7156) .

1888-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Mostly untoned. There is little criticism that can be directed at the gleaming surfaces of this Gem-quality coin as they highly attractive. The mint frost is radiant in the way it "cartwheels" over each side. All 1888-S silver dollars were carefully made; that isn't the point. Most which are very sharply struck, like this marvel of precision minting, will delight the eye with their detail. No, the important point is that few have this coin's overall superlative state of preservation and eye-appeal, which sets it apart. Pop 197; 20 finer, 18 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 7186) .

1890-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Prooflike. A nice white coin. Boldly struck. A lustrous example whose vivid wintry blast of white color on the devices undulates and billows atop the mirrored surface like a Mount Everest snowcap. Where an ineffectual imprint is sometimes left by the rebound of the dies that struck 1890-CC's coinage, the opposite is in fact the case here: devices show crystal clarity and abnormal detail in the centers. The only mark worth reporting is a small one on Liberty's chin. Bidders be on the alert, you may face stiff competition. Pop 10; none finer (PCGS # 7199) .

1893-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-53. Nicely toned. Not only is the mintage of 100,000 pieces the lowest in the series for a business-strike only date, but 1893-S is unchallenged in its rarity in About Uncirculated and finer grades. There is a small mark on the jaw below the ear and three others (equally minor) on the reverse above the eagle's head, above the top arrowhead, and below the left wing (from the point of view of the numismatist). The borders and legends have firm, mark-free expression of boldness. The eagle shows excellent wing detail. Popular key date. Pop 39; 59 finer (PCGS # 7226) .

1894-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 Prooflike. Well struck and mostly white with prooflike fields. The reverse, like the obverse, on most 1894-S dollars has outstanding detail; that is what is observed here, razor-sharpness throughout. Moreover, the coin is fully brilliant with nice two-tone almost cameo characteristics. A sharply struck near-Gem is always difficult to find, and one that has near-immaculate fields doubly so. In short, a lovely, carefully preserved example of this historic rarity in American numismatics, and a very pleasing Proof that competes gallantly against even some higher grade specimens offered recently. Of the silver dollars that were sold in Proof sets this year, many were undoubtedly mishandled, others later spent or lost. Pop 65 (PCGS # 7330) .

1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 63. Nice even golden toning on the obverse. Mostly untoned on the reverse. Rarest of the key date Proofs in the Morgan series, considered by all to be the King of the Morgan Dollars, this for obvious reasons. Only 880 Proofs were minted. It is from these few that tens of thousands of collectors, if not more, must compete for ownership of the small floating supply of choice coins on the market at any one time.

The coin is, simply put, choice, original, and very attractive. As can be seen in the photographs, it acquired pale original iridescent shades of color in its years spent in the possession of earlier generations of collectors. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, the hair is crystal clear down to the tiniest hair strands above the ear, and this also includes a resplendent eagle. A small mark on the jaw accounts for the Proof 63 grade and not something finer. Only 880 proofs struck. A proof only year (PCGS # 7330) .

1895 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62. Only 880 proofs struck. Mostly untoned. A key date that is known only in Proof condition. A couple of tiny toned spots on the reverse (at U of UNITED and in the left wing). This brilliant example displays uniform reflectivity as the fields gyrate under the light. Not the usual so-so toning that is heavy with conflicting shades that oftentimes obscures the beauty of the underlying surface. Further, the strike is typically full for the date with crisp hair on Liberty and a full eagle. The freedom from toning allows the mirror surface to play upon your field of vision, held back only by a few grade-limiting hairlines which are not all that visible at most angles. Records show the Philadelphia Mint delivered 12,000 business strike Morgan dollars in 1895. None have ever been certifiably identified. Either they went to the melting pots, or the Mint records are for some leftover 1894-dated coins that were not delivered until the summer of 1895. Be that as it may, we can say without fear of contradiction that Morgan dollar collectors will have to acquire a Proof 1895 such as the present choice example if they ever hope to complete a set of these impressive large silver coins. This lovely brilliant example displays uniform reflectivity in the fields and in so doing, gives a firm base, as it were, for the high-rising frosted devices. Both sides reveal a splendid two-tone effect as they rotate under the light. The strike is needle-sharp for the issue, as well, with all areas distinct. There are only scattered grade-limiting hairlines evident at most angles. Self-assuredness is one of this coin's leading characteristics. And why not? With so few Proofs made, and an ever-widening marketplace for Morgan silver dollars from new generations of coin devotees, this year's fame is certain well into the future. Pop 35. (PCGS # 7330) .
