Flowing Hair Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1179
1917-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. Mint mark on reverse. PCGS graded MS-64. As the relatively thin mintage figure relates, the vast majority of S-mint Walkers delivered in 1917 have the mintmark on the reverse. The total production amounted to some 5.5 million coins, most of which were used in commerce. Mint States survivors, those few that are free of wear and blossoming with full satin luster, are scarce. Most '17-S Reverse Mintmark half dollars have problems with strike, centers tend not to be sharply detailed. Fortunately, there is not a single outwardly noticeable mark on this choice MS64 specimen (PCGS # 6573) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,700.

Lot 1180
1918-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A spectacular coin with a light hint of gold toning near the edges. This totally enjoyable late wartime half dollar comes embued with exceptional full-strike detail, supplemented by an abundance of glowing mint frost with a wintry complexion adding increased visual appeal. This San Francisco date has long been recognized as elusive in Gem grades and rarely encountered in any of the higher ranks of Mint State. Pop 28; 2 finer, 1 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6576) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Lot 1181
1919 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice original toning on both sides. Well struck. A radiant gem of the kind of quality one likes to describe for bidders of this actively collected walking Liberty half dollar design. Careening cartwheel luster blends effortlessly with pale toning highlights on the frosted surfaces. A hint of weakness at that is typically seen at the head and Liberty's thumb is missing on this sharply struck specimen, with the key central areas strongly hit by the dies. This is plainly visible in the photographs, or when the coin is viewed under medium power magnification. The sound of bidding should take this up to a crescendo when a strong price realized is entered into the auction book. Pop 50; 18 in 66, 7 in 67 (PCGS # 6577) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1183
1920-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Satiny lustre and untoned. This coin emits attractive silver color, with no marks or problems, and is very choice for the MS64 grade. Devices are sharp in almost all areas, as struck, as desired by collectors, including much of Liberty's head and hand (there is even a visible split-thumb). It differs in important details from the run of the mill 1920-S in this condition. At times, the grading services tend to miss strike irregularities when they aren't too arresting, but this lovely 1920-S half dollar has the grade assignment and general detail most wanted by collectors (PCGS # 6582) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200.

Lot 1185
1927-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Outward metal flow lines enhance the billowing mint dazzle that emits like forked lightning from the surfaces, giving the coin a shimmering, glowing white appearance. The original mint brilliance is only interrupted by an occasional speck of toning. Furthermore, there is a meticulous strike on every device (unusual for 1927-S) and is exactly what collectors look for in a walking Liberty half dollar of this period. The numerical condition is exact and obviously was carefully evaluated by the grading service. Pop 246; 61 finer, 55 in 65, 6 in 66 (PCGS # 6587) .

1928-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. MS-60 Plus. Lightly toned with abundant luster over both surfaces and the strong wide rims that typify this S-mint release from 1928. San Francisco Mint was the only facility to strike half dollars this year (as it had been in 1923 and again in 1927). A scarce date (PCGS # 6588) .

Lot 1188
1934-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Mostly white. Satin fields rippling with cartwheel luster. The more matte designs stand out nicely against this finish. Virtually no toning, just silver-white color. All this is perhaps obvious from the photos. What we need to emphasize as well is that the strike is uncustomary in being crisp for a 1934-S, and rare so, with sharp metal flows into the deepest recesses of the Liberty and the eagle on both sides. Pop 81; 5 in 67 (PCGS # 6594) .

1937 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. Old green holder. Nice untoned Gem of this second year of Proof issue. The new designs for 1916 precluded the old-fashioned mirror-finish Proofing process due to the difficult "basining" of the dies for the Walking Liberty design. But under intense collector pressure during the mid-1930s, the Mint relented and began once more (after a 20 year hiatus) to offer Proof sets to collectors for a small premium over face value. Mintage in 1937 of the half dollar: 5,728. Pop 407; 171 in 67, 9 in 68 (PCGS # 6637) .

1940-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely gold obv toning. The satin-like luster is almost unimpaired by abrasions of any size on this pristine specimen from the San Francisco mint. The strike is crisp in most areas, as well, though some lack of detail may be noted at Liberty's hand and on the eagle's leg, both being centered at the high points of the design where the results of striking often fail to show completely.
