Draped Bust Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1067
1796 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. NGC graded AU-58 PL. Browning-2. Fully white. Well struck with nice prooflike surfaces. A very popular first year type coin. As the only issue in the Draped Bust, Small Eagle Quarter series, the 1796 is a must-have coin for the serious type collector. It is also a scarce date with a paltry original mintage of 6,146 pieces. This is an attractive mid-grade survivor whose surfaces are richly toned in dominant silver-gray shades. Outlines of deeper charcoal-gray patina are also seen around many of the obverse devices. The strike is expertly centered, all border denticles full with crisp definition. Liberty's portrait on the obverse is overall sharply defined, this despite moderate wear from time spent in circulation. On the reverse, the eagle is a bit more softly impressed, particularly over the head, but the wear on that side is also evenly distributed. There are a few wispy grazes here and there, but we stress that the surfaces are uncommonly smooth in appearance for an early U.S. silver coin that saw this extensive wear. Historically significant as a survivor of the United States' premier Quarter, this Choice VF example would make a lovely addition to any collection. Pop 3; 1 in 61 PL; 2 in 64 PL; Only 6 graded Prooflike at NGC. (PCGS # 5310) .

Rarity-3. The "High 6" variety of the issue, one of just two known die pairings for this low mintage single year type. This is the variety of 1796 that is most often seen. Early state: The obverse of this example is perfect, with no die cracks through LIBERTY. (On the more mature die state examples, several heavy die cracks have formed through ERTY and star 9.).
Estimated Value $55,000 - 60,000.

1818/5 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-65 B-1. Light blue and green toning around the edges. If you are the kind of collector who looks on Fate, not as a blind dispenser at random of the gifts good and bad, but rather as a benevolent being with a pleasing bias for the hard-working student of numismatics, then mark this lot as an important chance for securing a really beautiful Gem quality example of this Red Book overdate. It is worth a strong premium and that is for sure! The 1818 stands out since none were struck after 1815, and no quarters left the mint dated 1816 or 1817. Today's collectors assume the obvious in a day when the government struck coins "to order" in a free-coinage regime: silver depositors at the Mint opted for the more trade-worthy fifty-cent piece to the quarter dollar. Nicely balanced toning over both sides, this frosty MS65 is ideally preserved. For that matter, it would command an even higher number were it not for a few light hairlines in places. An earlier die state, there is no sign of what would become a bold die crack from the rim through the second T in STATES and on to the eagle's beak. There is, however, light die clashing evident around the eagle from a faint outline of the Liberty bust when the two dies came together without an intervening planchet. Worthy of the finest collection of large size bust quarter dollars. Pop 8; 2 finer in 66 (PCGS # 5322) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.

1825/3/4 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck Premium Quality coin with undisturbed soft steel grey satin mint lustre. This lovely quarter is very sharply struck and has fully lustrous surfaces, almost gem quality, on both obverse and reverse. In the lead-up to this section we were eagerly anticipating this coin's description since the fields shimmer and glow in a way that one would normally expect to see on a far higher grade specimen from this period. And so it is that we put this on a firmer base by including the "PQ" association with it. An exceptional quality example with only trivial hairlines and no other blemishes.

Browning-2. R2. Struck from a die in which the last digit was earlier punched as a 3 then a 4! Close overdate; Low 25 with large 5. Die state 2: reverse die crack through the base of UNITED and with the crack down to the scroll through D. Pop 4; 4 finer, 3 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 5336) .

The 1891-O is the only With Motto seated date struck at the New Orleans Mint and it is also the only New Orleans Mint quarter struck from 1860 to 1891. The mintage was quite low, only 68,000 Quarters being made this year.

Lot 1093
1918-D Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. A creamy golden lustrous gem housed in an old green holder. A wonderful, nearly pristine specimen and, unlike most Denver Mint issues, squarely socked by the dies to impart a full design. The obverse is toned with a fine almost transparent overlay of golden shades; in the same vein, the reverse is warmly toned. Both sides almost totally devoid of marks, both satiny, which figures into the equation as well, propelling the coin into the top ranks in its grade class. That is the great thing, after all. You must look at them together to get a fair understanding of this coin's significance. It is really wonderful! If anyone wishes to judge a high quality standing Liberty quarter, then this rare '18-D will surely open a person's eyes and draw a nod of the head. Pop 43; 14 finer in 66 (PCGS # 5723) .

Lot 1094
1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly white with a very clear overdate. A popular key date. One of the choices AU58 graded quarters of this classic rarity any collector could hope to own, this one has snowy white luster around the periphery, throughout the devices, and spanning the fields on both sides. We put the luster at close to 95% complete. Competing with the flashy luster for your attention are the well struck devices. Not all of the head detail is present, but quite enough to satisfy the connoisseur of this series. We must note that this date is nearly impossible to locate with a full head. The other areas carry the weight of the design with flying colors (so to speak). The surfaces remain quite clean, free of spotting, with just a couple of tiny tick marks hidden here and there.

This is one of the great rarities of the early 20th century. Few overdates were created, and all are well regarded by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, the grading services having seen slightly more than 500 in all grades high and low. It is possible that more may be out there in coin land still sitting in albums, having been put away decades ago. However, this possibility grows more tentative as they years go by. This handsome 1918-S overdate one has the minute diagnostics noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate is plain with or without a magnifying glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies prepared, one 1918 die received a blow from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was switched to the 1918 hub, and the die was stamped again. No one noticed the overdate, or if they did, weren't concerned enough to withdraw it, and the die was shipped to San Francisco and put into production, much to the delight of collectors. Pop 31; 43 finer (PCGS # 5726) .

Lot 1098
1926-D Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. A hint of light toning. This is the case in point of an extremely common issue (rolls of 1926-D quarters were still floating around the numismatic market as recently as the 1990s) in extremely rare condition: with a full strike and a full head on Liberty. It seems that mint in Denver was slacking off in 1926. Badly so. The nickels struck there that year are atrocious. The quarters, too, about as poorly made as any in this short-lived series that ran from 1916 to 1930. Yet a few, but only a few, 1926-D quarters, look like their brethren from the Philadelphia Mint. That is what is on display here. That is why we are proud to offer the current lot. A few '26-Ds were smacked squarely and properly by the coining dies. These few, of which this lovely toned PCGS example is a sterling impression, look the way this coin is meant to look. If you, as a collector, are anticipating the completion of a sharp set of standing Liberties, then it would be unthinkable and bad sportsmanship to pass on the current lot. We feel that the coin will provide years of genuine pleasure for the final bidder. For good or bad, it will likely go down in the record books as setting a new price realized high. Before memories dim, then, now is the time to act by submitting your bid. This minute, if not earlier! Pop 18; 11 finer in 66 (PCGS # 5757) .
