Draped Bust Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1035
1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. Very well struck with nearly full breast feathers visable. The planchet is problem-free and all is overlaid with gorgeous natural violet, deepening at the borders with a hint of irridescence. Pleasing dappled appearance. A wonderful example of the first American dime. The two-year Type features a draped bust of Liberty combined with the scarce small eagle reverse. JR-4 with a berry below the E in UNITED on the reverse. Pop 18; 7 in 65; 7 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 4461) .

Rarity-4. JR-4 is a scarcer die pairing from this highly collectible premier issue, estimated to represent about 10 percent of the surviving population of 1796 Dimes. It is one of the best produced die marriages for the year and can be recognized by the tips of leaves being aligned with the edges of the A in STATES and the F in OF. Additionally, the TY in LIBERTY is joined at the top of the letters.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

Lot 1036
1797 Draped Bust Dime. 16 stars. . JR-1. NGC graded EF-40. Struck on slightly clashed dies with plenty of detail to justify the lofty grade. Nicely toned in a uniform steel grey. This one denomination was the crucial test of whether the federal coinage system would be fully decimalized as Congress intended. However, actual coinage of dimes did not commence for some years. Silver coinage could not be legally made until late in 1794, because neither Assayer Albion Cox nor Chief Coiner Henry Voigt could post $10,000 surety bonds. The first coinage of dimes for general circulation did not take place until early 1796 (January to May).

The coins of 1797 are much rarer than those of 1796. Their reported mintage of 25,261 may possibly include as many as 3,864 dated 1796, according to the Breen encyclopedia. "The 6,380 of March 21, if not further 1796s, were probably 16-star coins, like the 9,099 of May 26." Breen further reports that "on Aug. 28 the Mint closed down because of a yellow fever epidemic, reopening in November. However, no more dimes were coined until July 1798, by which time the Heraldic Eagle dies were ready." Pop 1; 8 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 4462) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 1039
1820 Capped Bust Dime. Large 0. NGC graded MS-65. So-called Office Boy reverse (JR-2). A decent strike except for the usual weakness on stars 8 thru 13. Complete frosty mint lustre with a mixture of electric blue and light violet toning. Pop 11; 9 finer, 6 in 66, and 3 in 67 (PCGS # 4492) .

Thirteen varieties. All Common except JR-4 and JR-12. This date is the first of five different years to have 10 or more die varieties (the others are 1821, 1827, 1829, and 1833). Dimes produced in 1820 were from eight obverse and nine reverse dies used in combination for 13 different varieties. The recorded mintage for the year was 942,587 coins. This piece is JR-2. While this is a scarce variety, it is extremely popular among early dime collectors due to the spectacularly amateurish recuttings on the reverse die, commonly called the "Office Boy" reverse. Among other blunders, it shows the remains of an earlier punch between D and S in UNITED STATES; recutting on the third T, which is too high; recutting on the bottoms of S O in STATES OF; clear reworking on the M in AMERICA; and joining of the ME nearby. It is little wonder that -- even in a Mint that was not overly concerned about blundered dies -- this reverse is unique to this die marriage.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

1836 Capped Bust Dime. PCI graded MS-63 JR-3. A flashy bust dime with light golden toning and clear detail. Mint records list production of 1,190,000 dimes in 1836; only three die varieties are known. This suggests many were dated 1835. JR-3 has a Block 8 in date. The M in AMERICA is low (PCGS # 4528) .

1863 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo. Fully white gem. Without doubt the most visually stunning feature of this coin is its soft, frosted mint luster on the devices that produce a full "ultra" effect against the mirrored field. Full swirling mirrors, to be precise, cover both sides. In order to understand the superb grade further, notice that the coin is struck with care only now and then found; when it comes to the occasional softness at the high points, this piece received a full blow by the dies. Use it as a reference piece. Use it anyway you please. Just give it a strong bid. Only 460 proofs struck. Pop 2; none finer (PCGS # 4756) .

1891 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo. A fully white gem. Approximately 600 proofs struck. Mirror-sparkling fields ripple with original mint bloom. Against this are set nicely white, matte design elements achieving full cameo contrast on both sides. What's more, this is a solidly graded Proof 67, it displays above-average striking definition for a seated Liberty dime from the final year of issue. This is to say that the strike is 100% needle-sharp, not even a single fused hair strand over Liberty's head to keep this coin from being full. Pop 1; Finest graded at either service. (PCGS # 4788) .
