Buffalo Nickels

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 990
1925-S Buffalo Nickel. NGC graded MS-63. Lovely shades of green lilac and gold toning. Original luster still glistens through the toning on this choice specimen. The brownish gold accents cover much of the area. Struck from well-worn dies that imported a sound but not overly bold design (PCGS # 3956) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

Lot 991
1926-D Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-66. Nicely toned on both sides with luster that switches back and forth between nickel brightness and lovely shades of pale blue. A nice bold strike is seen on both sides. Recall that on many (most?) 1926-D nickels, a sharp strike isn't available. Inspect it closely and see if you don't agree with our assessment. That being said, we expect to see a near-record price realized when the time comes for it to cross the auction block. Pop 23; 1 in 67 Among the finest known (PCGS # 3958) .
Estimated Value $9,500 - 10,500.

1927-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely toning on both sides. A nice strike. A hard to match array of warm golden hues enhance the surfaces of this handsome '27-S buffalo nickel. All areas of the design show nice striking detail, including that seen at the bison's shoulder on the reverse, its head and split tail. All in all, the present prize is exceptionally beautiful. We are unabashed supporters of choice quality buffalo nickels like this. They are difficult to track down. Pop 232; 20 finer in 65 (PCGS # 3962) .

1928-D Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-66. A superb well struck gem with delicate pastel toning. Struck with meticulous care by the dies, which as every long-time collector of the series realizes, isn't commonly seen on a 1928-D. An untoned Gem with excellent luster and surfaces that are free from all but the most trivial luster grazes. This is one of the best. Pop 31; none finer (PCGS # 3964) .

1928-D Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. A spot-free golden gem. All devices were struck with the usual inconsistency of this Mint by the dies that left elements of the detail soft in places, but bold in others. Pop 280; 31 finer in 66 (PCGS # 3964) .

1935-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-67. Splendid steel blue toning on both sides. A coin bursting with silvery afterglow, fresh and blazing in appearance. The surfaces are clear of marks. Unlike the general run of dates in the 1930s from the branch mints of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in all places, even where some weakness is usually found at hair braid and on the bison's head. 1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legs. NGC graded MS-63 F.S. 020.2. Well struck and lightly toned. A original example of this unusual minting aberration! The matte-like surfaces are lightly toned rather than bright with volatile nickel-white luster, with typical appearance as though it the dies were heavily worked (which, indeed, they were). Higher quality than average for a 3-Legs buffalo nickel and easily matching or surpassing others sometimes seen in MS64 labeled grading holders (PCGS # 3982) .
