Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 793
1860 Indian Head Cent. Pointed bust. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Well struck and a mostly untoned Premium Quality coin. Volatile cartwheel luster graces satiny and dynamic ever-so-gently toned surfaces. What also sparks our interest on this 1860 copper-nickel Cent is the varying hues of vibrancy that mingle broadly with its rich iridescence. An attractive gem that shows off its bold strike with flair. Pop 27; 4 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 2056) .

1861 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-66. Boldly struck with nice light toning. The smooth-tan surfaces are radiant from rim to rim with no carbon to report. This has the lowest mintage among the copper-nickel dates, 1859-64. Pop 35; 1 in 66 Star; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 2061) .

1867 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red. Well struck frosty mint gem. Fully lustrous and reddish-orange in color. Dates in the late 1860s, and by this we mean primarily the 1866-69 run, are all extremely elusive in full Red condition. This specimen, with its sharp strike, is ahead of the others in many ways. A worthy addition to any connoisseur's collection of Indian head cents! Pop 9; None finer in Red at NGC. (PCGS # 2089) .

1868 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red. Well struck, fully lustrous and light golden-tan in color. A beauty, with nice original color on undisturbed surfaces free of discoloration. Furthermore, it comes solidly graded, an example that displays above-average striking definition for a Mint State 65 from this year. This is to say that the strike is complete, not even a single missing feather vein on the headdress over Liberty's head to keep this coin from being full. Pop 14; 3 in 66 Red at NGC. (PCGS # 2092) .

1873 Indian Head Cent. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Pop 20; 1 finer in 66 Much scarcer variety. Lovely light wood grain effect between the red color and deepening brown shades (PCGS # 2110) .

Coins of 1873 were made with Closed 3 in the date and Open 3 in the date. A quick glance at the 1873 Closed 3 date, made early in the year, resembled "1878," as the gap between the knobs on the 3 is narrow. The Open 3 was created by filing away most of the bottom knob on the 3 of the date logotype and trimming the knob to a smaller size; dies punched with this modified date logotype are called Open 3.

Both sides are richly frosted with alternating golden, orange, and crimson-red luster. The strike is complete, and the surfaces, judged from an aesthetic standpoint, possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for this year (PCGS # 2120) .

1877 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. A well struck Gem Proof exhibiting a blend of natural mahogoney and sea green irridescence. Plenty of fiery mint red still intact on the reverse. Our grade would be PF 65 RB. Key date and always in demand. Always popular as a Proof example of the key date in the Indian Cent series. No precise mintage figure exists for the Proof 1877 Indian, but enough information is available to make an educated guess. Breen lists 510 in his Proof Encyclopedia. The present estimate is now 910. It is known that 510 Proof sets were sold which included the five silver coins, the two nickel coins and the cent. Additionally, there were about 400 "minor" sets struck which included just the cent and the two nickel coins, of which we know 260 were mailed out, with the unknown remainder being sold over the counter in Philadelphia. Pop 7; 2 finer in 66 Brown (PCGS # 2318) .

1895 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-67 Red. Lovely original mint red coin. Impressive to say the least, here there can be no dispute over the grade, nor can anyone point to compromises in the beauty. None whatsoever. To repeat: no compromises possible, nothing stealthy about it! This is a remarkable coin that is refreshingly out-front with its quality. A Mint State 67 Indian cent that looks like it has just been hand-picked from an original roll. The frosty, satiny surface glows from strong underlying luster while a bold strike throughout all of the obverse and reverse details impresses us all the more, with not even once any of the usual obverse weakness.
