Due to the prominence of the sharp features of the King's face on the profile portrait, collector's have referred to this type as the "Rat Nose". This year 1772 being the final year this type was used before the new official older bust was adopted in the same year.

The mintmark on this piece is to the right of the Golden Fleece at the bottom of the reverse, rather than to its left which became the standard position in late 1773. This early subtype with the mintmark to the right of the Golden Fleece, was produced only during parts of 1772 and 1773. Both date are quite rare, this first year particularly so. Very few choice examples are known.
