Lot 4451
Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1503. Edward III, 1327-1377. London mint. Treaty period. Annulet before Edward. Obverse, King standing facing carrying sword and shield. Reverse: Floriated cross with e in center. This is a delightful coin - struck on an unusually large and round flan, well centered with a superb portrait. All lettering is well defined and the coin shimmers with original luster. NGC graded MS-62.

The background story is that this coin was recovered from a shipwreck, and was the best quality piece among those found. This would explain why there are no spade marks or any of the areas of damage which are often associated with gold coins of this period which have been discovered in the ground.
The gold noble was introduced in 1344 and was valued at 80 pence or one third of an English Pound. The gold nobles of Edward III are not as rare as those of Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V, but they are rare in high grade. It is true to say that most of the Edward III nobles have weak portraits and an uneven shape, so this coin is exceptional.

Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1657; Fr-100. Richard II, 1377-1399. London mint. King standing facing in ship, holding sword and shield. Reverse: Floriated cross with lis at ends. Type 1657 is one of the rarer types of Richard II London mint Noble and has a catalogue value of £2000 (around $3800) in only Very Fine condition. It is unpriced in any of the higher grades. NGC graded AU-58.

* This reign is notorious for the production of badly struck, and often off-center gold coins with pitted or otherwise poor surfaces. But this specimen has none of these characteristics and remains truly one of the nicest Richard II coins one could place in a high quality British collection.

Lot 4461
Great Britain. Ryal or Rose-Noble, ND. S.1951; Fr-132. Edward IV, First Reign, 1461-1470. Light coinage. Ruler in ship. Reverse: Ornamental cross. The gold noble had hardly changed in style, value or quality since the reign of Edward III and the increase in the price of gold during the 15th century resulted in a shortage of gold coins in England as they were taken to continental Europe for a profit. Eventually, during the early part of the reign of Edward IV, to stop the outflow from England, the value of all gold nobles in circulation was raised from six shillings and eight pence to eight shillings and four pence. A new coin-Rose Noble or Ryal-was introduced with a value of ten shillings. This coin was distinguished by the rose on the King's ship and a somewhat different reverse design. NGC graded MS-61.

Great Britain. Ryal or Rose-Noble, ND. S.1952; Fr-133. Edward IV, First Reign, 1461-1470. Light coinage. Flemish imitative coinage. Ruler in ship. Reverse: Ornamental cross. As England's European trade steadily increased during the 14th and 15th centuries large quantities of English coins which were known for their quality, good weight and metal fineness ended up in Europe, despite attempts to control their movement! Gold Nobles were so popular that they were imitated and produced in the Low Countries (now Belgium and Holland), but the style was quite different. This is an example of one of these interesting pieces. Struck on a large flan, with nice detail, this is a popular and desirable coin. NGC graded EF-45.

A nice portrait and a well struck example. Gold Angels of Henry VIII are very much a continuation from the reign of Henry VII. Great Britain. Gold Half Pound, ND. S.2535A; Fr-215. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Fifth issue. Mint mark, tun (1591-5). Bust of Queen facing left wearing, elaborate dress. Reverse: Crowned shield of arms. This very ornate type of Elizabethan half pound is considerably rarer than the plainer style half pound (S.2520) and probably much rarer than the pound piece in the top grades. This specimen, struck in the period 1591-1595 has prooflike fields, an abundance of original luster and is (very sharply) struck on a larger than average flan. An examination of the detail evident in the heraldic lions of the second and third quarters of the reverse shield must lead to the conclusion that in parts this is as finely made as any English hammered gold piece. There is a tiny area of weakness on the obverse, which corresponds on the reverse, but this is not surprising in a coin of this period. What is surprising is the sheer beauty and great eye appeal of this late 16th century numismatic masterpiece. NGC graded AU-55.

Great Britain. Rose-ryal, ND. S.2613; Fr-230. James I, 1603-1625. Second coinage. King enthroned holding orb and sceptre, with portcullis at his feet. Reverse: Square topped shield in center of elaborate Tudor rose, pellet stops and mint mark escallop both sides. This coin is more common in low grade (Fine to Very Fine) than the slightly smaller and more ornate James I third coinage rose ryal. But in high grade this second coinage piece is rarer. Surprisingly evenly struck on a large full flan, it shows no signs of the creasing, damage and weakness associated with this issue. Sharply detailed and with a good portrait, it is as nice as any example offered in recent years. A lovely example of this very rare coin, found in an almost unheard of grade. NGC graded AU-55.
