Christian was one of the more important monarchs of the time. His long reign (60 years), enabled him to consolidate his empire. He intervened on the Protestant side during the Thirty Years War, and fought with the Swedish king, Gustavus Adolphus, winning numerous battles. After Gustavus' death in 1632, he was so jealous of the larger Sweden, that the Protestant alliance fell apart. In any case, he produced exceptional coins.

REX, center, DOMIN9 / PROVI/ DEBIT. A lovely portrait example with considerable luster. NGC graded MS-63.

Frederick was one of those historical figures who was more lucky than good. He attempted to re-establish Danish influence, fought the Swedes and lost. Yet soon after, the Swedish king died, and he avoided a humiliating peace. In fact, the Treaty of Copenhagen after the war gained him much. Later, a constitutional revolution forced the nobles to cede much of their power to the monarchy. Thus Frederick became more powerful both domestically and internationally without taking any positive steps.

One of the rarities of this collection. Christian actually produced many different types of gold coins, but most had very low mintages. The example pictured here is almost never encountered. Add to that the incredible quality, and this is a very special coin. Christian did a better job of producing coins than managing his kingdom. He ingloriously died in a hunting accident.

Located in the Harz Mountains, large deposits of silver produced tremendous numbers of silver coins, but few gold ones. This is a tough coin to find.
