Russia. Alexander I, 1801-25. 1803 AE Medal, 65.3mm, by C. Leberecht. Honoring P.G. Demidov, founder of the Academy of Higher Sciences in his native town of Yaroslavl on the Volga River. During the period from 1803 to 1806, he donated nearly 4,000 coins and medals to the Imperial University of Moscow, including a group of rare Swedish coins and medals dating from the 16th to the 18th century coming from the former collection of Swedish numismatist Elias Brenner (1647-1717). The university collections survived the Napoleonic Wars and eventually found their way to the numismatic collections of the Pushkin State Museum. Diakov-283.1. Some light obverse spotting and traces of an old collector number "33" in the left obverse field, otherwise Extremely Fine and scarce.

Diakov-364.1, original Tolstoy dies. Count Feodor Petrovich Tolstoy, born in 1783 at St. Petersburg, lived 60 years beyond his creation of this medal becoming renowned as an engraver and artist. Forrer says he "certainly stands first among the artists of his country." A few minor rim nicks, otherwise Choice Extremely Fine.

  Russia. Alexander I, 1801-25. 1814 Set of three medals in Silver, Gilt Bronze and Bronze, 35mm, by T. Wyon Sr. For the Visit of Czar Alexander I and his sister Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna to England. Diakov-383.1 (R2 in AR); BHM-845, neither reference mentioning a gilt AE medal. Catherine, very much pleased with Wyon's portrait of the Czar on this medal, presented the engraver with a ring valued at 100 Guineas, a princely sum at the time! One can trace the progression of the reverse die break mentioned in BHM from the silver where it is just beginning, through the gilt AE to the AE where is it more pronounced. The bronze is VF-EF; the gilt bronze EF-AU and the silver medal is EF with handsome old toning. 3 pieces.

He took part in the campaigns of 1805-7, hounding the French during their retreat from Moscow in 1812, and again after their defeat at Leipzig 1813. He was in command at the victory of Altenburg in 1813, and was made a count for his valuable wartime services. Diakov-Unlisted.
