Lot 81
Clay, Henry (1777-1852) Statesman and orator; secretary of state; presidential candidate; called the "Great Compromiser." Autograph Letter Signed "H. Clay," as U.S. senator from Kentucky, one page, 6¾: x 4¼", Washington, 13 April 1850. Very fine. To Mr. Jos. G. Rosengarten of Philadelphia, regretting that he has no copy of his speech to send Rosengarten. "My own supply of them is exhausted, and I know of none to be obtained at the Printing offices or other places in this City…." With Free Franked transmittal envelope, addressed in Clay's hand to Rosengarten.

Thirty years after the Missouri Compromise, the issue of slavery once again threatened to tear the nation apart. On January 29, 1850, Clay presented to Congress a compromise that passed after eight months of debate. The Compromise of 1850 allowed slavery in the New Mexico and Utah territories while admitting California to the Union as a free state. It included a new Fugitive Slave Act and banned the slave trade (but not slavery itself) in the District of Columbia. This compromise delayed the onset of the Civil War for eleven more years.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
Ex Rosengarten family estate.
