1833 Letter on the Democratic Republicans in Massachusetts. A 2-page stampless, folded letter from James L. Libby to E. Case of Lowell, Mass., datelined Boston, 5 July 1833, with extensive information on a meeting of those "friendly to the principles of the old democratic party" at which they agreed to form "a ticket with a view to unite the Republican party in the support of the National and State Governments upon the principles which brought Jefferson and Madison into power…." More political content, with reference to the "Democratic Republicans…".

1834 Pennsylvania Bereavement Poem. Hand-drawn and hand-penned poem to Jesse and Margaret Kerns, who had lost Jesse, their 18-month-old son, 12" x 7½", 1834 Pen illustration shows the bereaved parents on either side of the tomb. Four stanzas. Light soiling, not affecting legibility. Original owners of this piece were from the Westchester area, just outside Philadelphia.

1863 Autograph Book From Alfred University. A handsome 8" x 5½" hard-cover book, 48-pages with gold-stamped title and gold-edged pages. Filled with notations and autographs, dated from 1862 to 1865, by male and female students who were attending Alfred University, the second-oldest coeducational institution in the United States and the oldest in New York State. Founded in 1836, the school took the unusual stance that everyone – regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion – deserved an equal education. A majority of the autographs, inscribed to a teacher named Miss Ladly, have small circular portraits. Very fine.

1926 Journal Of A Trip Abroad. Diary kept by Kerns Hampton, a Los Angeles man, of his trip abroad during 1926, 6½" x 4¼", worn leather covers; interior is fine, with light toning only. Hampton recounts his train trip across the country to New York, his trip on the Red Star Line ship S.S. Pennland, his visits to Antwerp, Paris and other French cities, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Holland, then London and a motor tour to Edinburgh, and his trip home on the White Star Line's S.S. Megantic. Many interesting observations.

1a Esposizione Nazionale Biennale d'Arte - Napoli, 1921. Six postcards, thuree from the 1921 Art Exposition in Naples, all three by M. du Dovich and all with the same rich blue background; two have a nude green and white woman holding a gold and white torch; the third shows a gold--clad woman holding a red and gold torch in front of two equestrian figures. All three have the time and place of the exhibition: "Maggio-Ottobre 1921 Real Palazzo," and all three are from Casa Ed. d'Arte Bestetti &TV Minelli-Milano-Roma. Of the other three postcards, two have Pompei as the subject and third is titled "Baccante." All are in excellent condition, with minor age toning to reverse.

Consists of ten Detroit Phostint color postcards showing scenes from "Grand Canyon National Park Set No 3", ca. 1910 and published by the Fred Harvey tourism firm who sold these cards on Santa Fe Railroad trains and their tourist hotels and stands. The cards are Mint or NM; the original decorated envelope worn. Scarce this complete.

African-American Caricatures, c. 1830. Six hand-colored lithographs from a series, "Life in Philadelphia," by British cartoonist Edward Clay, published in London. Each image is approximately 7" x 6", on original mounts, with titles excised as usual; each displayed within individual board frames, measuring approximately 14" x 11". Fine; overall normal age-toning. These images lampoon life in Philadelphia, using African-Americans as subjects of mocking derision. An interesting and rare grouping.

Colorful 1960s Players Cigarettes Metal Advertising Sign. This painted metal advertising sign in Spanish language titled "Conozca Players" measures 21.5" x 17.25" and shows Players cigarettes in flip top boxes, subtitled "Regular y Mentolado Kings y 100s". The surgeon general warnings began in the mid-60s and this sign likely dates from about that time. A few minor dents at the edges, otherwise near new with bright glossy painted images.

Also a "Rose Clark" signed card "I won't be home for dinner-Dear!", 1907 by Rotograph; a 1907 Boston Bean Teddy Bear card, 1907, Souvenir PC Co, NY; and a Cracker Jack Bears card No. 5, 1907 signed "B.E. Moreland". The first three postally used 1907-10, the fourth with address unused, the last unused. All average condition, but a scarce lot. 5 pieces.

Handwritten Pennsylvania History, C. 1830. Unpaginated (approximately 315 pages), 8" x 6", marbled boards with leather corners and spine, and numerous hand-drawn maps. Describes many aspects of early Pennsylvania, including native inhabitants, climate and crops, superstitions of the early Swedish and Dutch settlers, and the customs of the "aborigines." Written in a nice, legible cursive script. Very good condition; some rubbing to leather spine but interior pages fine.

Mormon Newspaper From 1853 - Deseret News. Oct. 15, 1853, Great Salt Lake City, U[tah] T[erritory], Vol. 3, No. 19, 24" x 16", 2 pages (inner pages blank). Very good; several edge tears at folds; corner creas; toning at folds. Front page carries "A History of Joseph Smith" and a 3-column speech by President Brigham Young, addressing the fear and concern arising from Indian attacks. A Mormon Missionary update on the back page has news from the Sandwich Island (Hawaii), stating that they "now have over 600 Saints" (converts). A fascinating early Mormon newspaper.

Morocco Vanity Travel Case. In burgundy colored morocco leather, maker marked "Mappin & Webb Ltd. Oxford Street London". Dimensions 13" x 9" x 9". Includes 7 bottles with hallmarked silver tops, some still containing the original aromatic liquids; a writing kit, sewing kit, two brushes, match striker, ink well, mirror, notions kit having implements with mother of pearl handles, notebook, several bone items, etc. all with matching leather details and also including the original key. On the brass lock an engraved registry number "04758", possibly traceable to the original owner through Mappin & Webb? This lovely item would benefit from a dusting and leather treatment, otherwise in very nice condition.

A great collection of 28 "Reward of Merit" cards which were given to students by their teachers for scholastic merit, industry, punctuality, and good conduct. These cards, which run from the 1860s through the 1880s, have the students' names and the teachers who awarded them. Many have attractive graphics (some in color). These cards are getting scarcer and more difficult to find. Very good overall.

Spainish Group of Full Color Famous Bullfighters Postcards, Manolete, Gallito, etc. This vintage 1920-30, lot of 13 cards consists of 12 cards showing famous bullfighters in the ring at various stages of the "fight". Some of the famous toreadors include the great Manolete (died after a goring in 1947), Bombita, Gallito (killed by a bull in 1920), Serranito and Vincent Segura. Also a separate color card of Pacomio Peribanez in full costume. The cards are EF to Near Mint, though slightly curved from the dried gelatin coating.

Stereoscopic Viewer With 4 Different Sets Of Cards. Turn-of-the-century stereoscopic viewer, in self-folding case. Accompanied by a complete six-volume set of well over 600 different WWI viewer cards, a 1906 set entitled "Jerusalem" with varirous black and white views of the old city, and a third full-color set of 95 different images of the Russo-Japanese War entitled "Siege of Port Arthur" dated 1905. The fourth set of 70 cards consists of 41 black and white cards and 21 colored stereoscopic chart cards from the WWI period, by a Dr. Wells. The cover of the box states that eye charts are to be used for testing aviators in the service of the U.S. Government. The boxes containing the six-volume set are in rough condition; the other boxes are fair to fine. All cards are very fine. The viewer has carved filigree and is in fine condition except for a small crack in the wooden slide holder, not affecting viewing the cards; there is also a separation crack in the wooden ring of one of the optic vieweers, and the fastening clasp is incomplete. A rare grouping.

Two Original Postcards From the 1st Modern Art Show In America. From the exhibit held at the 69th Regiment Armory at 25th St. and Lexington Ave., New York City, Feb. 18-Mar. 15, 1913. Postcard with a typed message about figuring out the "puzzles" in Marcel Duchamp's "King and Queen Surrounded by Nudes," which is reproduced on the card; some toning and soiling. The unused postcard has Picabia's "Danse à la Source"; toning and a couple of creases at top. Cards from this show are rare.
