Lot 330
1866 Shield Nickel. Repunched date. EF-40. This is in fact the variety described in the Cherrypickers guide as 1866/6 with the last 6 shadowed to the right. FS-001.2 variety, valued in that reference at $175 in EF. This coin is completely original, a gray-toned nickel with no abrasions or edge marks. A bit weakly struck in the shield, as usual for the date. A "gem" EF!

Lot 335
1868 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded MS-63. Softness of strike on both sides, typical of the early dates (nickel being a new coinage metal, and especially hard, meant the coining pressmen experimented with pressures for several years before "getting it right"). Faint spots all over the reverse but decent luster.

Lot 355
1883 Liberty Nickel. With "CENTS". MS-60. One small obverse spot on Liberty's cheek from a higher grade, this late year change incorporated the word "CENTS" on the reverse after a small number of the 1883 without "CENTS" were gold-plated and passed off as $5.00 gold pieces by certain less than honest individuals. These events received the usual unbiased press coverage, with trials involving certain stooges, and before long the reverse die was changed in late 1883. It all makes for a nice story, and no doubt far more of the original without "CENTS" issue have been gold plated to sell to collectors than were ever made to pass as half eagles by today's less than honest thugs.
