1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Curl base, no knob 2. MS-62. Full luster on all but the highest curls of Liberty and toned a delightful dark blue, gold and rose throughout. Well struck, with most of the stars showing central lines, and sharp on the eagle too. One small rim tick above IC in AMERICA. As beautiful a coin as one could expect to find for the grade.

Lot 963
1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Curl base, no knob 2. AU-58. Tied for sixth place in the revised Condition Census for the variety in the Don Parsley update of the Overton reference. Toned a dark gray with chocolate overtones, with luster in the fields. The curl base 2 has the knob, and the sixth stripe of the shield has the first two lines extended to the second horizontal stripe. Excellent rims and surfaces that don't appear to have suffered massive indignities by the judicious cleaning crew which seems to have located and hairlined virtually every surviving bust half dollar, much to the torment of luster loving collectors.

1830 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Small 0. AU-50. Frosty luster and toned a lovely gold at the centers, fading to blue around the rims. Little or no rims to protect this variety, the devices must have received the full brunt of even brief circulation.

Lot 978
1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Lettered edge. EF-40. A scarce variety and tough to find this nice. The surfaces show minor hairlines, no surprise whatsoever, and the coin is basically original appearing, with light silver at the centers and gold toning around the periphery. No circulation problems, and well struck throughout. Not in the Condition Census, but highly collectible in this grade.

Lot 979
1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Lettered edge, 50 over 00. EF-40. Cleaned and retoned to an ugly dark gray color with a chemists soup of blue and rose tossed in to attempt originality. A failed recipe, when will people learn to leave coins alone? The obverse has a few minor marks, and these were probably the reason for the valiant attempts at retoning.

Lot 981
1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. EF-40. Lightly cleaned with resulting hairlines in the fields and on the devices. Retoned to a medium gray color, and well struck. Technically a pattern issue, the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar was the first group of coins struck with the new steam press that had just been installed at the Philadelphia Mint. Most were saved, but many circulated as reflected in the low grade coins frequently seen. Only 1,200 were coined, and long listing in the Guide Book make this a required coin to own for many thousands of collectors.

Lot 986
1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Sharpness of EF-45 but scratches polished out. Dark gray in color in an attempt to cover up the removal of initials in the left obverse field, just above Liberty's ample cups, and also on the reverse on either side of the eagle's head. Always known as a rare coin, this one was repaired by someone who hadn't yet achieved a talented level of artistry.
