Liberty Seated Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 750
1862-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Sharpness of VF-20. Smoothed on the upper reverse probably to remove some rim marks. The entire surfaces have been brushed, and show myriad lines. A scarce coin nevertheless, with a low mintage and with the retoning should please most collectors.

Lot 752
1864 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. EF-40. Sharpness of a higher grade, but the fields and devices show a few too many lines from past cleanings. Still a bit of luster remains, and a coin with most of the eye appeal and without value impairing problems.

Lot 753
1864-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. VF-35. A rare date in decent condition, this coin has lovely surface color and only one rather annoying stray scrape extending from the middle of the shield up to the first A in AMERICA. This scrape is old and toned over, so it doesn't stand out like a beacon, but needs to be mentioned. A few other minor marks are also located on the reverse. Only 20,000 were struck of this date, very few of which remain in high grades like this coin.

Lot 754
1865 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. AU-50. A really choice, lustrous coin that has abundant mint frost and delicate gold toning. However, the planchet is slightly bent, and more curiously, there is no sign of damage that we can find to have caused this problem. The fields do have hairlines, as usual.

Lot 755
1865-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. VF-30. Medium gray in color and with average surfaces. There is an unimportant scratch from the rim between the first two stars, but it fades quickly. 41,000 were struck and no doubt most spent years in circulation as few are found in high grade today.

Lot 756
1866 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. With motto. VF-20. Choice for the grade, this very rare date is probably more available in Proof condition than in any other grade. A transition year with the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle, as mandated by Congress. The coining chute saw a dribble of 17,000 slide past the counter for the entire year of 1866 quarters as demand was still a mess due to the just ended Civil War. Quarter mintages wouldn't recover until the mid 1870s.
As to the coin here, it is simply beautiful, hints of luster remain in the fields, natural and beautiful toning adheres to the peripheral devices, and the strike is crisp and complete. Moderate handling marks as expected on a circulated coin.

1866-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. With motto. VF-20. Steel gray in color and well struck. Full LIBERTY on the shield, and the new motto is clearly visible and enhanced by dark toning around the lettering and devices. Another low mintage date with 28,000 struck for the channels of commerce that year.

1868 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. AU-50. Mirror fields as usual for the date, the polished dies were scarcely used enough to wear off the die polish, hence many high grade specimens retain mirror fields. As is normal, once such a prooflike coin enters circulation, the mirror fields quickly attract handling marks. Still and all, this coin has nice eye appeal in spite of the hairlines from circulation. Only 30,000 struck.

Lot 761
Fabulous 1868-S Liberty Seated Quarter. PCGS graded MS-63. This stunning coin boasts a PCGS population of a staggering 2 coins graded in all grades of Mint State, one an MS-67 and this coin. After examining this coin under a halogen lamp with a 10X B & L loupe, we can find scarcely a mark or hairline to account for this very average grade. We are certain this will be resubmitted for a higher grade, which it will no doubt get.
Full cartwheel luster dances in the fields, while satiny frost covers the devices. Obviously this coin was set aside and carefully preserved from the day of its issue. On the reverse there is bit of mottled toning, very original and appealing. For future reference, there is a tiny tick mark right where a necklace would reside on Liberty's chest if she were wearing one, perhaps this will help trace this extremely rare coin as it begins its reholdering grade journey through Parsippany and Newport Beach. What grade this coin eventually achieves is not that relevant, for it is truly a beautiful coin of the utmost rarity and desirability. The only factor which is currently undecided is just what the coin is worth, which is what an auction is all about.
We hope that all bidders who come to the sale take the time to view a beautiful coin such as this, for their own learning experience. Think of the many other MS-63 seated quarters you've seen and compare them with this coin. Only 96,000 struck, but an extreme rarity in Mint State or even in grades approaching.

1869 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Proof 62. A lovely coin that is graced by deep blue colors and a central rose and gold blast of radiance.   1869-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. EF-40. This is the scarce recut date variety noted in Breen, the 9 is recut in the lower part of that digit, and the 86 are recut and traces show in the dentils. Toned a light silver color, this is a very appealing coin which is another low mintage date that is scarce in all grades.

1870 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. MS-61. A frosty mint state coin that is well struck and awash in luster. Light gold toning around the rims. The fields and devices show minor tick marks from a higher grade, but are far better than one might expect for the grade.

Lot 765
1870-CC - The "Queen of Quarters". PCGS graded EF-40. This is the reigning queen of the seated quarter series in a very choice collector grade. The surfaces are far better than usually encountered from this Mint, with far fewer than normal handling marks. In color, this one is a delight, a steel gray tone evenly distributed on both sides with a few darker highlights near the devices. As to the strike, it is remarkable for the date, the eagle's feathers are all sharp, and the central obverse devices are also complete. If one must find fault, the obverse stars don't show their central radial lines, but this could be as much from wear as strike. In order to identify this extremely rare coin in the future, here are a couple of trivial hallmarks which should help, there is a tiny tick mark on the dentil between the two outer stars points of the second star on the obverse. On the reverse there is a tiny tick on the upper left serif of the F in OF.
If you have been searching for a truly exceptional coin for your date set, then here is the coin that you must own and will never need to upgrade.

1872-CC Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Fine-15. Dark gray in color and somewhat muddy in appearance, no doubt original. Well struck for this Mint, with full feathers on the eagle and drapery lines complete on Liberty. There is a dark raised spot at the end of the legend on the reverse. 22,850 struck for the year, and overshadowed by its older brothers the 1870-CC and 1871-CC, this coin is still very rare in its own right. Bid accordingly, it won't be easy to find one this original for your date set.

Candidate for Finest Known 1873 Arrows Quarter. NGC graded Proof 67. Gleaming deep iridescent blue and magenta mirrors here, and virtually flawless surfaces. A splendid coin! What more could anybody ask in such a coin? PCGS has not graded anything higher than a PR66. In fact, this appears to be the only one given a 67, and it fully deserves this accolade.

1873-CC Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. VG-8. Bright at the centers with darker toning around the peripheries. With the slight increase in the weight of silver in 1873, Congress announced this minor change by adding arrows on these slightly heavier (96.45 grains versus 96.0 grains) coins. Meanwhile the big silver strikes in Nevada began flooding the market with silver, and this was mostly coined into Morgan silver dollars once the appropriate silver friendly legislation was passed through Congress. Minor handling marks, and identifiable by a rim tick over the N of UNITED.

1874-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 Premium Quality. Now here's a coin we would expect to see in a recent MS65 holder, so it's been in a case for a while. With Arrows quarters are generally scarce, as Red Book prices indicate, for they were made in only two years. This specimen has an exotic and delicate look to it consisting of a golden lustrous white background on the obverse bathed in pale iridescent shades of gold and blue. The reverse side is deeply toned to an intense russet-amber in the center surrounded by a deep blue. A fine die-line cuts across Liberty's belly, but this is not a scratch. Frankly, this is among the truest MS64s we have seen in a 19th-century silver coin.

1884 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. MS-65. A frosty gem that is graced by a full strike, blazing luster and a golden halo of toning through the stars and peripheral devices. Examination will note a couple of trivial contact marks, maybe even a faint hairline or two, but nothing like what we usually see. A meager 8,000 were struck as the mints virtually shut down subsidiary coinage in order to produce millions and millions of Morgan silver dollars.
Apparently, coining silver dollars was the only way the mints could keep up with the massive inflows of silver from Nevada's Comstock mine and others, with silver being purchased at the mandated rate of $2,000,000 to $4,000,000 per month starting February 28, 1878. This law was rammed through Congress, over President Hayes' sensible veto, by "Silver Dick" Bland and Sen. Allison. One of the other tidbits about this law was that the mint had to purchase "domestic" silver, not foreign silver or recycled silver (both of which were less expensive). Hence, the massive production from the various mines in Nevada flowed in unceasing rivers to the various mints, where it was promptly turned into our familiar Morgan silver dollars, which were still being disbursed a hundred years later by various governmental agencies.
With today's more effective governing, we note that the Susan B. Anthony hoards are finding ready acceptance by the adoring public a scant twenty years after production through the Post Office and other federal agencies, no doubt in order to make way for the new hoards of Sacagawea's which will soon burden the same treasury vaults as the Morgan Dollars and Susan B. Anthony's of the past.
Hence, mintages fell to near nothing of subsidiary coinage in 1884, making this quarter a very rare coin indeed.
