1796 Draped Bust Cent. . S-119, R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty steel brown with peeps of faded mint red remaining in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a small spot of darker toning in the hair under BE in LIBERTY and a shallow planchet flake in the field left of the lower curls. There are some of the ever-present small planchet chips scattered about both sides, mostly on the portrait and wreath where tiny planchet imperfections didn't completely strike out. Otherwise the strike is sharp and the eye appeal is quite nice. Late die state, Breen state III, with small but clear rim cud breaks at TAT in STATES and a couple strong die cracks at the bottom of the obverse. Most likely from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state 1796 and 1797 cents. This hoard comes from a bag of cents purchased directly from the mint in 1797 by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. These cents were passed down the family and later dispersed in the 1860's by the Nichol's family, from whom the hoard gets its name. EAC grade MS60. The Hesselgesser provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 3; 3 in 64, 1 in 66 for the entire date.

No verdigris, and the minor roughness is effectively offset by a somewhat glossy steel brown and chocolate patina. Decent eye appeal for the grade, although the rim bruises are an obvious distraction. EDS, Breen state I. Called net VG7 by Noyes and tied for CC#5 in his census, photo #35691.

Lot 321
1800 Draped Bust Cent. . S-208, R3. VG-10. Sharpness EF40 but there are some strong dents at the neck and bust causing an obvious bend in the planchet. Too bad, because the planchet is smooth and the details are sharp. Glossy chocolate and dark steel brown with tiny specks of darker olive on both sides. E-MDS, Breen state II. The date and legends are complete and bold.
Estimated Value $400 - 800.

Lot 325
1801. Rare 3-Error Reverse S-218. . S-218, R5+. About Good-3 Error Reverse. Sharpness at least VG10 but there is a strong dent on the fraction that causes an obvious bulge at the top of the head. A smaller dent just left of the C in CENT causes a slight bulge at the hair ribbon. There are a few additional marks of more limited significance on both sides, all consistent with the grade. Rather glossy chocolate brown with a few specks of greenish verdigris in protected areas of the reverse. EDS, Breen die state I. The date is bold and the 3 reverse die-cutter errors are clear, although only the first 0 in the denominator is complete thanks to the big dent. A very rare die variety that is seldom seen with this much detail.
Estimated Value $500 - 1,000.
