1872, $5 National Gold Bank Note. National Gold Bank of D.O. Mills & Co., Sacramento, CA. Fr-1138. CGA graded EF 40. . Fr-1138. . KL-225. Only about three dozen $5 notes on this famous National Gold Bank have survived, including this beautiful example that is easily one of the best two or three listed in the census. The paper upon which these notes were printed did not wear well, and the vast majority of these Gold Bank notes did exactly as they were intended: circulated in commerce. Hence, most surviving examples from any bank are well worn. This note is a pleasant exception, and as such is an important rarity that should interest even the most fastidious collector. Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000. View details and enlarged photos

1882, $20 Gold Certificate. CGA graded Fine 12, Trimmed. . Fr-1176. . KL-553. This is one of only 20 examples of this rare number that have been recorded by Gengerke, who traces this specific note back to its Boys Town pedigree. Although the edges have been trimmed a bit, the colors remain solid for the grade and the overall appearance is quite attractive. Even with the advancement of prices in the currency market during the last several years, notes like this seem to this cataloger to be still highly undervalued -- a U.S. coin of similar rarity would likely bring multiples of the realization that we expect today for this note. Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000. View details and enlarged photos

1906, $20 Gold Certificate. Fr-1185. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 66. . Fr-1185. . KL-562. This beautiful Gold Note has broad margins that face up as fully Superb, and the colors are nothing less than spectacular. The bottom margin on the back is a tad low, perhaps the only reason a higher grade was not assigned. Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000. View details and enlarged photos

1906, $20 Gold Certificate. PCGS graded Extremely Fine 40. . Fr-1185. . KL-562. 1906, $20 Gold Certificate. Fr-1186. CGA Gem Uncirculated 67. . Fr-1186. . KL-563. This spectacular Gold Note appears to have fully earned its high CGA grade, as the margins are broad and even and the colors are spectacular. This design type often comes with tight margins, as the engraved notes on the printing plates were placed close together, but this is a pleasant exception. Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000. 1906, $20 Gold Certificate. PCGS graded Choice About New 58. . Fr-1186. . KL-563. Although we can't see the reason through the holder, this lovely Gold Note likely missed out on a Gem grade only due to a single light fold that was located by the experts at PCGS. No other flaws are readily evident on this broadly margined example that displays a wonderfully deep orange color on the back. Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,200. View details and enlarged photos

1922, $20 Gold Certificate. PCGS graded Gem New 65. . Fr-1187. . KL-564. Although this note did not receive the coveted "PPQ" designation from PCGS, it is still a beautiful Gem example with great centering and excellent eye appeal. No embossing is evident--perhaps the reason why the "PPQ" designation is absent--but there were no folds found by the graders and the visual aesthetics are not easily matched. Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500. View details and enlarged photos

1882, $50 Gold Certificate. PMG graded Very Fine 25. . Fr-1192. . KL-697. This is a great rarity that the Friedberg catalog does not price above VF, and a number that is represented by only 16 examples in the most recent Gengerke census--four of which are permanently impounded in government institutions. This is one of the top four or five known, and the colors are bold and bright. A rare opportunity for the gold certificate specialist, and certain to inspire spirited bidding. Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000. View details and enlarged photos

1922, $500 Gold Certificate. PCGS graded Very Fine 30. . Fr-1217. . KL-940. A solid, brightly colored example that displays only modest circulation, this lovely $500 Gold Note represents an excellent opportunity for the advanced collector. Though not rare by sheer numbers as about 50 examples are currently known, this is always a popular note that is in continuous demand in any grade from type collectors. This note has a long auction history dating back to a Stack’s sale in 1983, and has sold at an ever-advancing price level every time it has sold. Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000. There are currently about 50 examples of this Fr. number known, with this solid circulated example right about in the middle of the reported grades. There are no visible significant flaws, and the colors are rich and bold--especially the orange-gold coloration of the back. This type is under constant pressure from type collectors, who value this note both for its high denomination status and for the attractive design. Estimated Value $17,000 - 20,000. 1922, $1,000 Gold Certificate. CGA graded Very Fine 35. . Fr-1220. . KL-1006. Only about three dozen examples of this rare Fr. number are known, with this about in the middle grade-wise for the issue. This note is listed in the census as "VG-Fine," at which grade it appeared when it last sold on a fixed price list in 1977 -- a good example of how grading standards have changed over the years. It certainly appears to be accurately graded by today’s standards, and is attractive with a bold orange-gold color on the back. Estimated Value $25,000 - 35,000. View details and enlarged photos
